Karen Teetzel, Inpatient Nurse Resident Recruiter

Mayo Clinic Hospital
5777 E Mayo Blvd,
Phoenix, AZ, 85054

Dear Ms. Teetzel,

I am writing in regards to my application for the Nurse Residency Program starting in July 2019. In May, I am
graduating from the University of Arizona with my Bachelor of Science in Nursing. I learned about this program
from my externship at Mayo Clinic Hospital, Phoenix, last summer in 2018. I had such a positive and beneficial
experience during my time as an extern, that I would be thrilled to return to Mayo Clinic Hospital as a new
graduate. My primary preceptor, Alyssa Anderson and other individuals from unit 4E encouraged me to apply
and after seeing first-hand the values, goals and teamwork that occurs on an interdisciplinary level, I truly could
not imagine beginning my career anywhere else.

I believe that altogether, my experience as an extern and my part-time employment throughout nursing school
have contributed to the communication and time-management skills I possess and the foundation of nursing
that I have built. I have many memories from my externship and will always remember one day in particular,
when I was helping to care for a newly admitted patient that was visibly anxious. With this patient I was able
use therapeutic communication extensively. That afternoon he asked me about what it was like to be a nurse
extern, so I tried to summarize the role and explain how it was a privilege for me to care for him and other
patients. He responded, “well I think its 90% personality, and I know you’re going to be just fine,” and smiled.
That evening at shift change he thanked me for all the care I provided, and in those moments I felt that my
sincerity and compassion were evident and helped me build patient-centered relationships.

Moreover, I feel that I have demonstrated a strong desire for learning and self-improvement during my
rotations in my nursing program. I am constantly seeking to gain a greater understanding of nursing practice
and skills, as well as learning about frameworks that address the patient comprehensively to achieve the best
outcomes. My personal values align with that of Mayo Clinic’s Mission, the Relationship-Based Care Model for
Nursing and the Commitment to Safety, and because of how I perceive quality-care, I believe this Nurse
Residency Program is a great transition for me as a new graduate, to an utmost caring and skilled clinician.

I hope that following review of my resume and application I will be strongly considered for an interview, I can
easily be reached via cell phone or email. Thank you for all of your time and consideration of my application,
and I hope to hear from you in the near future.

Sincerely,

Kayleigh Alegria
