DISCUSSION

A control valve is a valve used to control fluid flow by varying the size of the flow passage
as directed by a signal from a controller. They are usually found in systems that a control
valve is a valve used to control fluid flow by varying the size of the flow passage as directed
by a signal from a controller. The purpose of running this experiment is to determine and
study the installed characteristics of three control valves in their respective piping system and
to determine and study the installed characteristics of three control valves in their respective
piping system. Two parts of this experiment were conducted with different pumps which are
big and small pumps.

For experiment 1, the pump used was a small pump. It is connected to three different
characteristic curves which are FCVL, FCVE and FCVQ. The result shows that from table 1
which the characteristic curve was set to FCVL mode. The adjust FIC manual output (MV)
that were set to 100 have the lowest DPv for both channel 3(GN) and green pointer or trace
which are 2.2 and 2.5 respectively. MV set to 20 has the highest value for DPv which are 23.2
for GN and 28 for trace. In Table 2, the characteristic curve was set to FCVE mode. The
highest value obtained for DPv are MV set to 10, 30 which the GN value is 22.7 and green
pointer is 28 while MV set to 100 has the lowest value of DPv with GN value equal to 2.2 and
green pointer value equal to 2.5. For table 3, the experiment was set to FCVQ mode. The
highest value for DPv obtained by MV set to 0,5 which GN value is 22.7 and trace value is
2.8. The lowest value for DPv in this mode is obtained by MV set to 80 which GN value is 5.7
and trace value is 7. From this three characteristic curve, FCVL has the highest value of DPv.

Next, experiment 2 was conducted using big pump and also was set to three different
characteristic curves (FCVL, FCVE and FCVQ). For experiment that was set to FCVL mode,
0,5 which GN value is 57.7 and trace value is 22 has the highest value of DPv. and MV set to
100 has the lowest value of DPv GN value equal to 10.4 and trace value equal to 13. For
FCVE mode, MV set to 0,5 and 10 has the highest value of DPv which GN value is 54.1 and
green pointer value is 67. MV set to 100 only obtained 22.2 for GN value and 22 for green
pointer value. Lastly for FCVQ, again MV set to 0,5 and 10 has value of GN equal to 58.6
and green pointer equal to 73 which the highest value of DPv among them. MV set to 100 also
has the lowest DPv with value of GN and green pointer is equal to 12 and 44 respectively.
From this three characteristic curve, FCVQ has the highest value of DPv.
Based on the result shown, it can be concluded that the lower the MV value, the higher the
DPv value. For experiment run with small pump, FCVL mode has the highest DPv.value while
FCVE and FCVQ both has same value of DPv.. Compared to experiment run with small
pump, experiment 2 was run with bug pump and FCVQ has the highest value of DPv while
FCVE has the lowest value of DPv. This could be because in this flow characteristic, equal
increments of valve opening (stoke percentage) produce equal percentage changes in the
existing flow. The change inflow rate is always proportional to the flow rate just before the
change in position is made for a valve plug, disc or ball position. When the valve plug, disc
or ball is near its seat & the flow is small, the change in flow rate will be small; with a large
flow, the change in flow rate will be large.
