• Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

• Engagement: The students will have multiple opportunities to speak and discuss the lesson with both the teacher
and their peers. Students who choose to do so will be able to speak at the beginning of the lesson to the whole
class. During the think-pair-share, each student will talk. This gives students who are confused the chance to hear
what others have to say as well as giving them the opportunity to express their opinions without the pressure of
having everybody’s focus on them. During the peer review, they will also discuss what they did very well as well as
areas they could improve. This helps all students to see how well they are doing in a positive yet constructive
environment. The students will also be engages while playing the Kahoot review game.
• Representation: Since the students often need to be reminded of wat they have learned, the beginning of the
activity of sharing what they know about writing opinion pieces will activate their prior knowledge of the subject.
Vocabulary will be supported by going over key terms relating to the topic such as words that deal with providing
evidence and stating an opinion. They will be provided with written instructions where the prompt will be written
and the activity will also be told to them orally. This will allow all students to fully grasp the concept and since the
information will be told to them and written, students who learn in different ways can have multiple means of
instruction.
• Action and Expression: This will take place as the students are working on writing their opinion pieces. They will
each have their own paper and create their own products as they write about how they feel on the given topic. They
will also demonstrate what they know when they discuss what they wrote with one another and explain why they
chose to write the opinion that they did. The students who struggle with writing more than others will be provided
with sentence stems. By working on something hands on, the students will be able to put into practice what they
are learning about.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.

Student Response and Assessment Tools
Before beginning the SRT activity, the teacher will review opinion pieces with the students. The students can
ask questions that may have and the teacher will have information prepared to share with the students that
will cover all of the important components that should be considered when writing an opinion piece. They will
also participate in a think pair share in which they will share what they know or what they have learned about
writing opinion pieces.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☒ Assess prior knowledge ☒ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☐ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

During the activity, the students will all be asked to get out a device that they can use to participate in the
Kahoot review game. This can include phones, iPods, and tablets. If students do not have their own, they will
have classroom tablets provided to them. Each of the students will be instructed on how to log in using the
game code. Once each student is connected to the game, they will answer each question on their devise. Hey
will be able to see what the correct answer was after every student replies or time runs up. The teacher will
be at the computer running the game and explaining the answers. The activity should last about 10 minutes.
Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):
☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☐ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not?
I want the students to be able to see what they were able to get right and wrong. This will allow them to be
reassured in their understand or it can also clarify something that they originally misunderstood or had not
yet mastered. By pre-selecting correct answers, I can be prepared to help students who are unable to answer
the questions correctly.

Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?

Following the SRT activity, the students will all be given a prompt if they think that schools should have longer
recess. After writing, they will participate in a peer review process. They will looks over each other’s paper
and revise their own after they have been returned.

How will the data be used?

After this activity I will be able to see how many students chose the correct answers for each question asked
on the Kahoot game. I will be able to use this information to decide where to go next in the lesson. I will re-
address areas of weakness, but I would not waste time by continuing to go over areas that the students

clearly already understand. If I notice that a couple of students in particular are struggling, I can go to them
during their work time and scaffold so that they can gain a more clear understanding of the concepts
presented in the lesson. I would not inform the students who got answers wrong, but if some questions had a
significant amount of correct answers or wrong answers, I would make this information known to the class so
they can have a clear understanding of the overall understanding of the class so they will know that they are
not alone.
Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.
I have used Kahoot in my own classes, but I have never created one before. I have not created anything
similar to this either so it was definitely a learning experience. By making this activity I am trying to see how
effective it is to use with students and how much information on student understanding can be gathered
from using this format. I hope this activity is helpful to students because when I used to play this game,
everybody in the class was engaged and having fun while reviewing at the same time.

Reflective Practice:
I feel like the activities included in this lesson are extremely beneficial to incorporate into classes, especially
the older elementary students. I think that they would love how the activity is in the form of a game and by
using Kahoot, each student can remain actively involved and interested in the topic at hand. In order to
extend this lesson, I would focus the next step on learning about a different type of writing. For example, I
would create a Kahoot and a lesson about writing informational pieces. This would help them to broaden
their comprehension on different types of writing while still using the same ideas from this lesson. There are
also some other SRT that I could use in case the students get bored with Kahoot. There are many similar
resources available for teachers.
