Time Description
2-19-19 1 hour Today I helped with Gordon’s pronunciation class, which is part of
the ESL program. Today I worked along side of Christian who is
from Peru . Gordon had me read a poem that really tests one’s
pronunciation. Each student in the class read a stanza from the
poem and I was there to help Christian with words. We then all read
from the book “Gladiator”.
2-28-19 1 hour Today once again I was with Gordon’s pronunciation class where
we had a conversation about conjunctions because the students
tend to say the two words when seeing a conjunction in a sentence.
Today I sat next to who a woman from Mexico but I didn’t get her
name and we worked on a page in their workbook.
3-14-19 1 hour Today I stepped in the reading and grammar class where we
focused on can would and could. The students are preparing for a
test next week and so we went over a packet that had reviews. I was
asked to walk around and help the students who needed help. Most
students didn’t need my help except one student was grateful for
my help so I worked with her mainly this time. Her name is Delfia
and she is from Mexico. This grammar class showed me how
terrible my grammar was also.
3-26-19 1 hour Today we focused on nouns and verbs and adjectives and the
students were assigned to write 10 sentences using one of the
words provided in the text book. I rotated around the classroom
and corrected the student’s sentences and helped them write a
couple more sentences.
3-28-19 1 hour This hour was a continuation of the last hour where we focused on
reading and writing. We focused on a page in the textbook that
focuses on the word “evidence”. The page is about the basic
principles of forensics. We ran out of time so for the last little bit I
tried to help the students finish the worksheet so they didn’t have
homework.
4-2-19 1 hour I helped out with Gordon’s pronunciation class and today there
were only three students and also three volunteers that showed up
so this enabled us to do some one on one work with the students. I
sat next to Christian whom I have worked with in the past. The
students are working on this pronunciation poem for their final and
some of them are getting really good at it! The three students read
from their book and we talked about the words they were still
struggling with. Gordon had everyone including the volunteers to
say the words out loud. I got to the class pretty early and was able to
get to know Christian a little better. He told us about how in his
country all they eat are potatoes, potatoes, and more potatoes. He is
from Peru and talked a bit about Machu Picchu and how it has
exploded with tourists ever since social media.
4-4-19 1 hour Today I helped out with George’s class and we focused on
pronunciation. We were in groups and focused on the
pronunciation emphasis on the word right after a question. We did
an exercise where one person described how to make a sandwich
and then the other person questions the steps to make sure it is ok.
Each student including me told something they like to cook.
4-8-19 1 hour Today I helped in Andy’s class and we were separated in groups and
we had the freedom to pick our own topics. I was matched with the
people that happened to all be from Mexico. We talked about why
they decided to come to America and how long they have been here.
We then just kind of started a conversation that went all over the
place but it was good because I learned a lot about their culture. All
three of them didn’t know English before coming but speak English
better then I speak Spanish.
4-9-19 1 hour Today I started in Gordon’s class and then noticed we had more
volunteers then students so I headed to help George’s class where
there were no volunteers. The students did an exercise where they
had to explain something they learned about in the class or
something they learned about someone in the class. This class is
very energetic and a lot of fun. They had me take a turn of what I
liked about this class or have learned and I have only volunteered in
there once before so it was a bit funny when I shared. They then
asked me to share what I have learned as a student in general and
that was nice to reflect and give advice on college classes. I advised
them to get to know the other students in the class and get to know
the teacher.
4-11-19 1 hour I helped with Andy’s reading and writing class today because the
time before in George’s class some students said this was the class
they needed the most help. In the class we stuck to the student
handbook and did the exercises in the book. We focused on nouns,
verbs, and adjectives. The student that requested my help is named
David and he is from Mexico. David is really good in the other
classes I have helped in but did seem like this class was his weakest.
4-11-19 1 hour This was the second half of Andy’s reading and writing class and we
were put into groups and practices reading paragraphs and circling
nouns, underlining adjectives, and putting a square around verbs.
There were sometimes in this class where I didn’t even know what a
adjective was. It taught me since growing up learning English I have
really taken the language for granted. It puts things in perspective
on how hard people really work to learn the English language.
4-11-19 1 hour Today I helped with Andy’s class and a couple students did
presentations to help speak English out loud to an audience. Andy
said he likes volunteers on days like today because he likes the
volunteers to help judge the English spoken. I wasn’t harsh at all but
I was able to give some pointers mainly on pronunciation. There
was a couple spelling issues in some of the slides that we helped
point out. All the students sounded great speaking out loud and
were less nervous then me when I give a presentation.
4-17-19 1 hour I helped today in Theresa’s class and it wasn’t a typical day of
volunteering compared to what I have done. Today a couple
students did presentations and Theresa was glad I came because
she wanted me to comment on the pronunciation of the students
presenting. She said as the teacher she as grown accustomed to
understanding the international students but another may not
understand as well. The students did a really good job presenting
there was some feedback I was able to give.
4-17-19 1 hour This was the second hour of Theresa’s class for this hour she had
reserved the computer lab so the students that hadn’t finished the
presentations could work on them or other homework. I’m glad I
volunteered at this time because I was able to really help in this
hour. I floated around and helped with various things. I helped with
technical issues with computers to helping one student design a
PowerPoint. There is one student is blind and I was able to help her
by reading the assignment out loud to her and help her click the
answers she collected. Today was special because I helped two
other cultures in one, The ESL culture and the vision impaired
culture.
4-18-19 1 hour Today was my last volunteer hour and I helped out in Gordon’s
pronunciation class. Much like my first volunteer day we went over
the same poem since their finals are coming up soon. The poem has
tough words that even native speakers can get mixed up. This poem
is what their final will be on. It is amazing to see how the students
have evolved over the semester. They have really worked hard and
are amazing at reading the poems.
