School Board Meeting

I attended January’s school board meeting. Meetings are held in the McCone Room

located in the Parish Center from 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm on Wednesday’s. Attendance was given

and absent attendees were noted. Time was called at 4:32 p.m. and prayer began by Sr. Celeste

Botello. The president of the school board along with the principal of the school, Jill Longo and

Jennifer Ramirez welcomed everyone and introduced the guest speakers for the meeting. A

motion to approve the November minutes as written was called by two members of the board.

The guest speakers were then called to present. The guest speakers were 7th grade students who

discussed their Christian service projects as well as talked about other Christian service projects

other classes are also involved in.

In the meeting board members were called to report on their specific committees.

Committees that presented were finance committee, Board Affairs, Policy and planning,

technology committee, development which also included: Blessed are the Children Campaign,

public relations, endowment, and advancement. Other committees were PTO. These committees

each presented what they are currently doing as well as future work. Many board members had

electronic devices and the finance committee in particular had handouts with budgets and tuition

numbers. Development also presented handouts describing current campaign donations as well

as other donations. These handouts were presented electronically as well as in print. PTO

discussed the schools largest fundraiser, The Red Tie Ball. It also discussed talent show and gift

gathering parties for the schools largest fundraiser.

Lastly, the pastoral council was called. The pastoral council discussed the current work of

the parish which included Filipino community novena and the need for a communications

director. Other business was discussed, such as, the need for a business meeting in May. They
also discussed moving April’s meeting to May and holding a year-end celebration on June 19.

They finalized the meeting and called for the next meeting to be on February 27, 4:30 p.m. The

meeting was adjourned at 5:27 p.m with a prayer by the pastor father Tony. Overall, the board

meeting was well organized, different materials were distributed with many sent electronically.

There were no power point presentations but many members had laptops as they took notes and

viewed paperwork via their emails. Many guest speakers are teachers, faculty, or students from

St. Philip which inform board members of current work that students are working on in class, the

work being done by faculty members, or students speak on particular projects they are working

on at school, extracurricular activities, or clubs they are in.
