CNS 745b: Clinical Mental Health Counseling Internship II

Assignment: Statement of Individual Learning Goals
01.20.19

During my final internship experience, I would like to focus on implementing specific interven-
tions as they relate to the theoretical framework that I am using with various clients. I spent
most of my first semester internship working from a cognitive behavior theoretical framework,
and incorporating person centered techniques frequently. However, toward the end of the semes-
ter I began exploring narrative theory and solution focused theory. I find that allowing client to
develop their narratives helps them revisit the past or map out their future through whimsical sto-
rytelling in a safe space.

In terms of case conceptualization, I have learned more about the intake process and am comfort-
able conducting intake assessments and going through the fact finding questions. I am confident
that I conceptualize cases fairly accurately based on the initial information gathered. I will need
to continue to work on the diagnostics and length of therapy sections of this process though.

Despite my previous belief that I am fairly self-aware, my values and comfort zones were tested
my first semester of internship. I am now more aware of my limitations and biases. Although I
have always known how my core values and feelings about cultural differences impact my inter-
actions with others, I was surprised at how much theirs would impact me and change my per-
spective of the worlds they live in. Additionally, I learned from practicum and Internship I the
value of self care, carving time out to exercise and forcing breaks for meals to prevent illness and
burnout.

Finally, I am so glad I made the decision last semester to seek a different site from my practicum.
Working in outpatient has provided me the ability to research, explore, and implement multiple
theories and work with individuals in different developmental stages. The potential for profes-
sional growth and development is limitless. I was able to take at least two trainings last semester
and I am looking forward to attending more and possibly obtaining at least one certification in an
area of interest prior to graduating. I would also like to learn about some of the administrative
duties that take place in small private practice such as billing and coding. As, I am sure preparing
for discharge with my clients will be bittersweet, I know that is also a necessary part of the coun-
seling process. It is my hope that I have helped my clients in a way that when it is time for dis-
charge, they will have a new skillset in place to help them cope with some of life’s difficulties.
