V. LESSON: BUILDING THE LOCAL CHURCH (A HEART FOR GOD’S HOUSE)

The local church is the first institution that our Lord, Jesus Christ has established upon this
earth.

He is the founder and the foundation of which He is building His church.

Ephesians 2:19-22 (NKJV)

19
Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the
saints and members of the household of God, 20 having been built on the foundation of the
apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone, 21 in whom the
whole building, being fitted together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord, 22 in whom you
also are being built together for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.

A. Jesus is building His church.

Jesus expressed His passion when He spoke to His disciples about building His church.

Mathew 16:18b (NKJV)

I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.

We are God’s living temple in which He is building upon the foundation of Jesus who is
the living cornerstone.

1 Peter 2:4-6 (NLT)

4 You are coming to Christ, who is the living cornerstone of God’s temple. He was
rejected by people, but he was chosen by God for great honor. 5 And you are living
stones that God is building into his spiritual temple. What’s more, you are his holy
priests. Through the meditation of Jesus Christ, you offer spiritual sacrifices that please
God. 6 As the Scriptures say, “I am placing a cornerstone in Jerusalem, chosen for
great honor, and anyone who trusts in him will never be disgraced.”

B. God desires a house.

The bible says that David had a heart after God (Acts 13:22). He was grateful for what
the Lord has done for him personally, for his family, and for his country.

2 Samuel 7:1-5 (NIV)

1 After the king was settled in his palace and the LORD had given him rest from all his
enemies around him, 2 he said to Nathan the prophet, “Here I am, living in a palace of
cedar, while the ark of God remains in a tent.”

3Nathan replied to the king, “Whatever you have in mind, go ahead and do it, for the
LORD is with you.”

4 That night the word of the LORD came to Nathan, saying:

5 “Go and tell my servant David, “This is what the LORD says: Are you the one to build
me a house to dwell in? 6 I have not dwelt in a house from the day I brought the
Israelites up out of Egypt to this day. I have been moving from place to place with a tent
as my dwelling. 7 Wherever I have moved with all the Israelites, did I ever say to any of
their rulers whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel, “Why have you not built
me a house of cedar?” ‘

C. David’s heart to build God’s house.

David heard the request of the Lord and wanted to do something great for Him! A
grateful heart will always respond with an outpouring of love, support, and dedication to
the one who had come to their aid.

David had a grateful heart. His desire was to fulfill God’s request.

1 Chronicles 22:5a (NIV)

“…the house to be built for the LORD should be of great magnificence and fame and
splendor in the sight of all the nations…”

David had it in his heart to build a house for the Lord, the God of Israel.

1 Chronicles 22:6, 7 (NIV)

6
Then he called for his son Solomon and charged him to build a house for the LORD,
the God of Israel. 7 David said to Solomon: "My son, I had it in my heart to build a house
for the Name of the LORD my God.

**Do you have it in your heart to build a house for the name of the Lord our God?

D. A heart of passion for God’s house.

What an amazing passion to have a heart for the house of God!

1 Kings 8:17, 18 (NIV)

17
"My father David had it in his heart to build a temple for the Name of the LORD, the
God of Israel. 18 But the LORD said to my father David, 'Because it was in your heart to
build a temple for my Name, you did well to have this in your heart.

**Do you have the same passion to build the house of the Lord as David did?

David did well because it was in his heart to build a house for the Lord!

Temple).

And the Lord said to him, “I have heard your prayer and your plea, which you have
made before me. I have consecrated this house that you have built, by putting my
name there forever. My eyes and my heart will be there for all time.

This is what the Lord says about His house! The church is His house! We are the
church!

to tell others…God is using us to speak to you…as though Christ Himself were here
pleading with you, receive the love He offers to you – be reconciled to God.

Luke 14:23 (NKJV)

Then the master said to the servant, ‘Go out into the highways and hedges, and
