Online Projects, Collaboration Sites and Publishing Opportunities

Lesson Idea Name: Writing a narrative

Content Area: Writing
Grade Level(s): 5th
Content Standard Addressed:
ELAGSE5W3: Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique,
descriptive details, and clear event sequences

Technology Standard Addressed: Digital Citizen

Selected Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity:

- KidPub
URL(s) to support the lesson:
Describe how you would incorporate an Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity in your
classroom:
I will incorporate the online collaboration site in my classroom to expand on a writing lesson. I will teach my
students several of lessons on writing a narrative. I will teach them the characteristics of a narrative and
demonstrate to them how to write a narrative. As a class, we will read different narratives and I will have my
students write their own narrative. The students will work on a draft of their narrative for several of days. I
will tell them that we will be typing our final drafts on KidPub. I will explain to them that KidPub is a
collaborating site, in which students publish their writing and peers read and leave notes about their writing.

The students will be instructed to post the final draft of their writing on KidPub. After all the students have
published their writing, I will first read their writing and write a note to the writer about their writing. Then, I
will teach the students how to leave notes on a classmate’s writing and provide them with prompts to assist
them in writing a note for their peers. I will instruct each of the students to write a note on two writing pieces
of students in our classroom. I will remind them to observe if the student is using the strategies, we learned
about writing a narrative. After the students provide feedback to their peers, I will have students volunteer to
share their writing.
What technologies would be required to implement this proposed learning activity in a classroom?
The students will need computers or laptops.
Describe how the following features are addressed in this learning experience (note: all of them may not be
addressed in the project, but most should be if you are reaching a high LoTi Level).
a. Collaboration with peers, near-peers, mentors outside their classroom and often beyond their school:
The students will have the chance to make a note to their near-peers on their narrative writing piece.

b. Student-centered learning and knowledge creation (creating original data and or producing original
products as a result of engaging in a project): Each student will be creating their own narrative and
publishing it to KidPub. Their peers will view their writing and leave them a note.

c. Higher-order thinking: The students are using high ordered thinking by creating a narrative using the
strategies they learned and providing feedback to their peers about their narratives.
d. Students publishing their original work to others who will use/care about their product: The students
are publishing their writing, and the peers in the classroom will view their product.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Engagement: The students are engaged in the lesson, by learning how to write a narrative and collaborating
with their peers on KidPub.
Representation: The students are provided another way to view content, by reading their peers’ work on
KidPub and providing them with feedback through the website.
Action and Expression: The students are able to show their creativity, by writing their own narrative piece and
publishing it.

Lesson idea implementation and Internet Safety Policies:

I could implement this collaborating website and implement internet safety policies in several of ways. First, I
can ensure that I have consent from parents, before letting their children publish their work on the website.
Second, I can have the students not provide their names or any personal information on the website. I will
read over the narratives before they are published. Last, I could ensure that I am following the policies for my
school, and discussing the collaborating site with parents, before incorporating it in my lesson.
Reflective Practice:
The activity I created impacts students learning, because they are able to apply what they have learned about
narratives and evaluate the narratives of their peers. The students are provided with an activity that will help
them think deeper about narratives and provides them with practice on the content. To further extend this
lesson, I could have the students add more content to their papers and share the papers with their parents.
