Course Description: Preamble: This is a traditional course taught in the classroom setting. It will introduce
holistic nursing care of adults experiencing acute or chronic illness in selected structured
settings.

Course Description: Medical-Surgical Nursing I focus on nursing practice with


adults experiencing a wide range of acute and chronic alterations in health.
Health promotion strategies and health care principles are examined with an
emphasis on endocrine system disorders; care of the patient with peri-
operative care, including surgical procedures, pre-operative care, post-
operative care, aseptic technique, and complications associated with surgery.
Course Credit: 5 (2 Class/3 Clinical)
Classroom and Theory: 45hours
Lab/clinical hours: Lab: 15 hours
Clinic: 72 hours
Class time: All classes are from Aug. 26th to Dec.6th
Classroom time: Monday, 8am-11am
Lab time: Friday, 2pm-5pm (Aug. 26th—Sep. 30th)
Clinical time: Friday, 8:30am-4:30pm (Sep. 30th — Dec.6th)

Course Objectives: At the completion of the course the student will be able to:
1. Discuss the factors that influence an individual's ability to tolerate
surgery.
2. Describe the nurses’ role in educating the patient pre and
postoperatively.
3. Discuss populations at risk for complications related to surgery.
4. Demonstrate competence with devices used to prevent complications
of immobility.

5. Demonstrate professional values that employ ethical, legal, and moral


standards in caring for patients and their families with medical/surgical
conditions.

Skills Lab Objectives:


Upon completion of this lab the student will:
1. Perform proper technique for suture and staple removal.
2. Demonstration of data gathering related to the skin.
3. Perform dressing change using medical and surgical asepsis.
4. Demonstration proper care of posting surgical drainage unit.
5. Perform wound ulcer care.
6. Demonstrate competence with devices used to prevent complications of
immobility.
Grading Policies: Grading Information and Course Requirements Final grades for the course will
be determined based upon the following point assignments:
A - 90-100 B - 80-89 C - 70-79 D - 60-69 F - Below 60

Five (5) points will be deducted for each day an assignment is late (including
weekends) if prior arrangements have not been made with the course
instructors. Final assignments for the course must be submitted on time, i.e.
will not be accepted late.

Grades will not be rounded when calculating the average (79.5 is not rounded
to 80 and 89.5 is not rounded to 90).

Reading Assignments: Assigned readings in graduate education are the


beginning, not the endpoint. These readings will point you in the direction of
continued reading and pondering of your scholarly thoughts. Each participant
is responsible for completing the reading assignments in a timely manner.
Deadlines are listed in the Course Schedule.

Discussion and written assignments are made with the assumption that
required reading assignments are completed prior to completion of discussion
and written assignments.
