Appendix D: Lesson Plan

Subject/Grade level: Algebra I / 9th

Unit topic: STAAR
Lesson Goals: The student will be able to identify the properties of quadratic functions.
Lesson title or topic: STAAR review
Estimated length of lesson: 45 minutes

TEKS Standards:

 AI. 6 Quadratic functions and equations. The student is expected to: A.

 AI. 7 Quadratic functions and equations. The student is expected to: A.
Learning Objective(s):
The students will be able to use graph of quadratic functions to identify properties such as vertex, axis of
symmetry, minimum/maximum, y-intercept, x-intercept(s), domain and range.
Academic Language:

 Vertex  Axis of Symmetry  Minimum/Maximum  y-intercept

 x-intercept(s) / Solution(s) / Zero(s)  Domain  Range

Materials:

 Bell Work  Pencil  Calculator  Reporting Category 4  Exit Ticket

Resources:

 STAAR and Benchmark 2017-2018: these state tests helped to create the reporting category 4 packet.

Gradual Release of Responsibility:

The lesson will begin with the teacher explaining the bell ringer as a review of a previous reporting category.
The teacher will start the class explaining the lesson objective.
The teacher will review how to find the properties of quadratic functions from a graph. The teacher will time
up a set of problems from the packet (I do).
Students will work the set of problems individually. (We do).
During each timed section, teacher will be supervising and guiding students.
Once the time is up, the teacher will explain how to solve each problem (I do).
The teacher and students will repeat the same exercise with 3 more different set of problems (We do).
During the exit ticket, teacher will be only monitoring the students (I do).
Students will identify properties of quadratic functions such as vertex, axis of symmetry, min/max, and
solution(s).
Instructional Procedures:
The class will start at 2:27 pm.
The teacher will ask the students solve the bell ringer on their own. (3 minutes)
The teacher will explain how to solve the bell ringer problem. (1 minute)

 Introduction: The teacher will introduce the topic and the lesson objective. The teacher will explain the
students what reporting category 4 covers.

 Teacher Modeling: The teacher will model how to solve the set of problems in the assignment.
Teacher will explain the steps in detail. (2 minutes)
The teacher will provide the activity instructions.

 Body of the Lesson & Independent Practice: The main activity will take place. Students will work
individually on the set of problems assign. Students will solve a set of problems at a time. Teacher will
go over that specific set of problems at the board.
This exercise will be repeat 3 more times. (Total of 35 minutes)

 Guided Practice: Teacher will be walking around the classroom to monitor, supervise, and guide
students throughout the assignment.

 Conclusion: The teacher will conclude the class with an exit ticket. Students must identify properties of
quadratic functions such as vertex, axis of symmetry, min/max, and solution(s). (5 minutes)
The class will end at 3:12 pm.

Assessment:
Summative assessment will be based in the bell ringer and RC4. Formative assessment will be based on the
exit ticket. The teacher will determine what type of properties must be re-teach.

Accommodations/Modifications/Enrichment:
-Limited English Proficiency (LEP)
For the LEP students, the teacher will monitor their work progress to ensure students comprehension and
teacher will model steps in detail for a better understanding.
