Course Description
The Philippine History viewed from the perspective of selected primary sources in different eras, approaches, analysis and interpretations.
The course is basically aimed to expose students to the different phases of Philippine History as viewed by several eyewitnesses. Instead of
relying on secondary materials such as textbooks, which is the usual method in teaching Philippine history, different kinds of primary sources
will be considered. Quantitative and qualitative writing, oral, visual and digital approaches covering the Philippine political, economic, social
and cultural will be applied. Learners are expected to analyze and interpret the selected readings contextually as stated and implied. The
underlining purpose is to enable the students to understand, interpret and appreciate our past and culture by deriving insights and ideas from
those personalities who were actually present at the very time of the event.
The historical context of the source (i.e. time and place it was written), the background of the author, the intent, the authority on the subject
and the relevance of the source and meaning will be thoroughly analyzed and considered.
On the other hand, content analysis will be applied through different appropriate learning techniques such as oral, written or visual means.
During the course of the discussions, the students will be asked to identify the author’s argument, compare point of views, identify biases and
evaluate the author’s claim based on evidences presented at the time.
The instructor may arrange the readings chronologically, start with the present which is more familiar, and go back to the earlier periods or
vice-versa. (CMO No. 20, series of 2013).
The course includes mandatory topics on the Philippine Constitution, Agrarian Reform and Taxation.
