Aim
9 Measure lens penetration into the groove and correct the lens size in order to reduce
the retouch rate.
Principle
9 The stylus has a second tip showing the same geometry (angle) as the lens bevel.
9 The Scanform™ compares the difference of penetration between the normal stylus and
the second tip. This difference, if it exists, is applied to the lens size for perfect fitting.

Functions
The XY table has the two following functions:
• Automatic lens transfer from the shadowgraph zone to the target zone and back to the shadowgraph zone in
case of a prismatic or single vision lens processing.
• Move and turn the lens automatically before blocking it, according to the picture analysis results and job data.

Shadowgraph zone
Composition
The shadowgraph zone components are:
• Collimator.
• Opaque screen.
• Shadowgraph camera.
Function
The function of this zone is to determine the progressive lens markings, the upper segment of bifocals, the three
lay-out dots of the lensmeter and the lens outline (for all lenses). It is also here that the recognition of patterns is
performed (PROS).
Opaque screen Lens markings, bifocal upper segment, lens outline lighted by the collimator are projected on
the opaque screen. It has to be clean and steady. Any scratch or finger print could be
interpreted as a lens characteristic.
Shadow-graph • The shadowgraph camera traces the picture of the lens or the pattern through the opaque
camera screen.
• The picture processing of the Axcell analyses and determines the markings, bifocal lens and
lens or pattern outline. It is therefore necessary to have a picture with good contrast and
good sharpness to increase the relevance of the picture processing.
Maintenanc
The target zone components are:
• Target.
• Lighting lamp.
• Target
Functions
The function of this zone is to find out the optical center, axis and power of single vision or prismatic lenses.
Component description
Component Description
Target • The target is made out of a flat lens on which two concentric circles and a cross are
engraved. Those markings are well known and perfect.
• An opaque screen diffuses an even lighting on the target.
Target • The target camera acquires: OK ? the target picture through the lens to be analysed.
camera • The spherical, cylindrical or prismatic power distort the target and move its center.
• The analysis of this distortion and movement of the center makes determination
of the optical centre, axis and power possible for single vision and prismatic lenses.

Shape comparison
Principle
• After tracing a metal frame, both right and left shapes are compared. If the shape
difference is important, the message “A defective frame may cause an axis error.
Would you like to see it?” comes up.
• The difference can be due to a shape or axis difference between both sides of the frame.
This feature does not correct anything but just warns the operator about a possible
shape difference between the two sides of the frame.
• The right circle (in red) and left circle (in blue) shapes are displayed as superimposed.
Then the operator can see the shape differences in order to re-work the frame.

This function makes possible the detection of possible hard spots in the travel or rotation
of the system driven by the stepper motor.
The test consists of entering a percentage of the rated power of the stepper motor.
Extreme values: 0% = no power - 100% = rated power required for the motor.
Axcell – FC 00 436-03 1 - 17
To start the test, proceed as follows.
Step Action
1.
Note: At 100%, the hard spot would not have been detected.
Press on the displayed value above and to the right of the key
Result: A keypad appears on the screen.
3.
Enter the desired value and press on .
Result: The motor power is tested with the desired value. If a hard spot is detected,
the movement may stop or at least be slowed.
Burn-in
Burn–in: function
The burn-in function consists of simulating the use of the machine to check its behavior after several
operating cycles.
Le burn-in is accessible to the two technician profiles, “Technician” and “Expert Technician”.
Burn-in: access
Recommendations
: When you start Scanform™ burn-in, it is essential you use a metallic frame of standard
shape (rectangular, of average size, not asymmetric) and equipped with nose pads.
: When you start the burn-in of the XY table, it is essential you use a round single vision lens,
of a reasonable power, i.e. < -2 or > to +2 dioptres.

Turning off
• It is essential to turn off Axcell before any intervention on the machine.
• If the intervention requires Axcell to be turned on, protect electrical and electronic parts
(connectors, PC boards) with an insulation element in order to avoid any short circuit in
case a conductive item is dropped (wrench, screw, etc.).
FC ribbon cable
Axcell has FFC ribbon cables.
Please note the following precautions for use:
2. Do not handle the FFC as shown in the figure below. This may damage the connector.

Opening of the lens gripping plate
An incorrect adjustment of the opening of the lens gripping plate generates skipping of teeth (cracking
noises) between the plate and the Theta rotation motor. This also creates a loss of reference on the
Theta axis and problems in opening the elements of the plate.
When one or several micro-switches have been adjusted, it is necessary to readjust the maneuvering
stop of the lens gripping plate.
The position of the micro-switch(es) having been changed, it is essential to adjust the maneuvering
stop in the general adjustment phase of the XY Theta table.

Test of the cleanliness and the quality of the opaque screen
To test the cleanliness and the quality of the opaque screen, proceed as follows.
Step Action
1.
The image processing system searches for possible black marks on the opaque screen.
These marks are generally due to specks of dust stuck to the surface of the opaque screen.
At the end of the procedure, a message indicates the state of cleanliness of the opaque
screen.
The light intensity is analyzed in two perpendicular directions X and Y (respectively marked
on a red line and a green line).
When the analysis is finished, the values of the following elements are displayed:
1. "Opaque screen dirty/clean": Message indicating the state of cleanliness
detected by the system. If the opaque screen is judged to be dirty, the black
marks corresponding to the specks of dust appear in yellow on the image
displayed. In this case, clean the opaque screen.
2. "Average" : Field indicating the average light intensity of the image displayed.
This value must be near to 165 +/- 5 (it is used to adjust the aperture of the
shadowgraph camera).
3."Deviation on 5": Field indicating the peaks of the light intensity detected on
one “sliding window” of 5 pixels the length of the X or Y axis.
4. "Deviation max" : Field indicating the difference in maximum light intensity.
The light intensity is generally maximal at the centre of the image and
decreases as the edge of the image is approached.
2.
2 - 18 Axcell – FC 00 436-03
Step Action
3. Analyze the screen:
• The X axis shows you the position of the pixel, O corresponds to the centre of the
image.
• The Y axis shows the light intensity of the corresponding pixel.
The two superimposed graphs (red and green) correspond to the two directions shown on
the image of the opaque screen of the previous screen.
Each graph represents the parameters explained on the previous page.
A satisfactory profile would consist of two curves (red and green) relatively rectilinear and
with no marked peaks.
4.
The centre of the image appears lighter On these graphs, the great amplitude of the intensity
than the edge. confirms the observation made opposite. You also see
several pronounced peaks.

Word Definition
Timeout Time interval during which the program is waiting for an action (example: switch
actuation). If the time limit is reached without the action is performed, the program
shows a Timeout error.
Insufficient During the motion of a component, the stroke measured does not correspond to the
stroke theoretical stroke.
Loose of steps During the motion of a component driven by a stepper motor, the number of counted
steps between two micro-switches actuation does not correspond to the number of
expected steps.
Motor not In the MTR, a motion driven by a stepper motor has not been initialised. The micro-
initialized switch initialising the origin has not been activated.
Sensor error On a motion controlled by two micro-switches on opposite end end-stops (example:
blocking unit, jaws, door), both switches show an illogical status (example: up and
down end-stop micro-switches are triggered).
