“FIP-erentiation” Workshop
Date: March 16th

Title: “Fip-ernetation”

Focus: Utilizing formative instructional practices to effectively implement differentiation in the

high school classroom

Setting: Teachers can either participate in this workshop through face-to-face instruction in my
classroom at Mountain View High School or via the Weebly website on their own time. Teachers
who are among the laggards or late adopters will be encouraged to participate in the face-to-
face instruction.

Audience: All content and grade level teachers at Mountain View High School

Duration: Initial session-1 hour

Overview: During this session, teachers will learn how to utilize eCLASS (Desire2Learn) to
conduct formative assessments that drive their instruction. Teachers will also learn how to use
formative assessment data and eCLASS to provide differentiated instruction in the role of a
facilitator instead of an instructor.

Objectives: By the end of this workshop, teachers will be able to:

1. Make a formative assessment using eCLASS quizzes

2. Use release conditions to sort students for the differentiated activity based on formative
assessment data
3. Use formative assessment data to provide differentiated instruction
4. Create a choice board on eCLASS to provide students with their individualized lesson
based on their formative assessment data

ISTE Standards

educational goals, managing their own learning, and assessing their own progress

C. Customize and personalize learning activities to address students’ diverse learning

styles, working strategies, and abilities using digital tools and resources

D. Provide students with multiple and varied formative and summative assessments
aligned with content and technology standards, and use resulting data to inform learning
and teaching

Standard 4: Promote and model digital citizenship and responsibility

B. Address the diverse needs of all learners by using learner-centered strategies

providing equitable access to appropriate digital tools and resources

Standard 5: Engage in professional growth and leadership

A. Participate in local and global learning communities to explore creative applications of

technology to improve student learning

Materials: Teachers will need their laptops during this session. All other materials will be
provided to teachers via a screencast and direct instruction. These screencasts can be seen on
the video page of the Weebly website. The tools that we will use for the lesson are also tools
that they can use in their own classrooms.
1. eCLASS quiz
2. Screencast for creating an assessment
3. Screencast for creating a choice board
4. Screencast for utilizing release conditions on eCLASS

Procedures

1. Teachers will then login to eCLASS and complete a quiz on eCLASS to demonstrate the
process that their students would go through should they decide to use this strategy (10-
15 min)
a. After teachers take the quiz, depending on what they get on the quiz, they will be
automatically directed to one page or another to simulate the possibilities of
differentiation through using the quiz feature on eCLASS
2. When the teachers are redirected they will be taken to either a screencast or a step-by-
step guide on how to create a choice board on eCLASS.
3. They will be instructed to make a “choice board” with four different elements
a. This is the procedure that use regularly in my classroom. So, I will also provide
teachers with a “highlight” video showing what it looks like in action (30 min)
4. After teachers have been taken through the process of their choice boards they will be
grouped together with people from their department and from other departments to
brainstorm how they can actually use this in their own classroom (15-20 min)
5. Debrief and feedback
a. Teachers will be asked to complete a “Session Evaluation Survey” based on their
experience with this workshop
b. Teachers will, at this time, have the opportunity to request additional training,
make suggestions to improve on the session style or content, request specific
training of another kind or topic, etc.
c. This survey is an adaptation of Guskey’s 5 Levels of Evaluation

Follow-up
1. To encourage teachers to bring this strategy into their own classrooms I would like to
have a “contest.”
a. Teachers will submit a lesson plan or video that demonstrates their use of this
strategy
b. The department innovators will blindly vote on on the best lesson or most
effective use of the strategy
c. The winner of the “contest” will be featured on the school’s landing page, they will
receive breakfast, and an extended lunch for one week.
i. These artifacts can then be used to help promote this strategy to the
specific content areas or course teams to encourage formative
assessment and differentiation
