16th, 17th, 18th, and 19th Amendments

The Progressive Era was a time in

American history when society was
looking to make progress in social,
political, and economic reform.
This era was dominated by a group of
people that called themselves the
Progressives; and along with President
Roosevelt, Taft, and Wilson they set to
advance the United States into a new
era of overall reform (change).
16th Amendment
Congress has the power to tax income based on the amount of money
you make and property that you own.
** This amendment corrected the issue of collecting taxes
based on the size of the state, rather than the size of your
actual income.
17th Amendment
This changed the method of electing Senators into US Congress by
giving the people of each state the right to vote them into office.

*** Prior to this amendment, the State legislatures appointed the

Senators into office. This new method was more democratic and
limited the amount of corruption by political parties.

BUT...
18th Amendment
Made the manufacturing, sale, and distribution of alcohol illegal.

*** This amendment was an attempt to purify society by eliminating the

damaging affects that alcohol had on individuals, families, and society as
a whole. This is the only amendment that ever limited the rights of citizens
and not the government.
19th Amendment

Right to vote cannot be denied based on gender.

*** This amendment gave women the right to vote, and was the first
governmental attempt in moving towards equal rights for women.
This amendment later inspired many Americans to fight for liberties
in the 1950's and 1960's during the civil rights movement.
