Design Of Brick Wall for Ware House :-

1 Data :
Height of wall (H) = 3.00 m

Length of wall (L) = 4.56 m

Thickness of wall ( t ) = 0.23 m

Selfweight of the brick wall = 62.82 kN.m²

H= 3.00 m

L= 4.56 m Wall

2 Slenderness limit calculation (Annex F, of BS EN 1996 part 1)

Height/thickness (H/t) = 13.02

Length/thickness (L/t) = 19.83

By inspection of Figure F1 (BS EN 19996 part 1), this is well acceptable

Hence OK

3 Wind Pressure Calculation

From Spec. 2.2 climatic and geographic condition (page no - B1-44)

Maximum wind speed (V) = 25 m/s
Design wind pressure (Pz) = 0.613 x Vz² = 383.13 N/sq.m
(Cl. No - 2.1.2.1 of BS 6399-2,1997)
= 0.38 kN/m²

4 Earthquake Load calculation

From UBC-1997, we get,
Cv = 0.96 (Table-16-R) I=1 R=
(Table-16-K) (Table-16-N)
Soil Class = SE (Table-16-J) and as per soil report.

Ca = 0.36 (Table-16-Q) Z = 0.3

T = 0.16 (eq:- 30-8) Na = 1 Nv =

(Table-16-S) (Table-16-T)

Calculated base shear coeffiecient = Cv x I / R / T = 1.070

(eq:-30-4 of UBC 1997)
Maximum limit for base shear co-effiecient = 2.5 x Ca x I / R = 0.164
(eq:-30-5 of UBC 1997)
Minimum limit for base shear co-effiecient = 0.11 x Ca x I = 0.040
(eq:-30-6 of UBC 1997)
For Seismic Zone -4,
Minimum limit for base shear co-efficient = 0.8 x Z x Nv x I / R = 0.044
(eq:-30-7 of UBC 1997)

So, Designed Earthquake co-efficient = 0.164

Earthquake load at centre = 10.28 kN
Earthquake pressure for for whole wall panel = 0.753 kN/m²

Maximum pressure for design consideration (W) = 0.75 kN/m²

5 Flexural Design

Charecteristic flexural strength for bick masonary :-

Plane of failure parallal to the bed joint (fkx1) = 0.25 N/mm²
From Table 3 of BS
Plane of failure perpendicular to the bed joint (f kx2) = 0.80 N/mm² 5628-1-1992

Now, Developed bending moment (M1) = α1 x W x l² per unit length of the wall
(Eq. No 5.17, of BS EN 1996 part 1)
Now, Developed bending moment (M2) = α2 x W x l² per unit heightof the wall
(Eq. No 5.18, of BS EN 1996 part 1)
Now, Orthogonal ratio (µ) fkx1/fkx2 = 0.313
(Cl. No 5.5.5 (7) note of BS EN 1996 part 1)

Aspect Ratio of wall (H/L) = 0.66

From, Annex E, of BS EN 1996 part 1,

α2 = 0.04
α1 = 0.01

So, M1 = 0.20 kN-m per m

M2 = 0.63 kN-m per m

Now sectional modulus of the section (Z) = 8816.67 mm³

Stress developed at plane of failure parallel to the bed joint = 0.03 N/mm² (with load factor 1.5)
Permissible stress = fkx1/γm (γm = 3.5) = 0.07 N/mm²
(γm = 3.5 From Table 4 of BS 5628-1-1992) Hence OK
Stress developed at plane of failure perpendicular to the bed joint = 0.11 N/mm² (with load factor 1.5)
Permissible stress = fkx1/γm (γm = 3.5) = 0.23 N/mm²
(γm = 3.5 From Table 4 of BS 5628-1-1992) Hence OK

6 Shear Design

Maximum Shear force developed = W x L x H /2 = 5.140073 kN

Factored shear stress developed = 0.033522 N/mm² (with load factor 1.5)

Charcteristic shear strength (fv) = 0.15 + 0.6gA (minimum consdered)

(Cl. No. 25 of BS 5628-1-1992)
gA = design vertical load per unit area. We are neglecting this to be at safer side

Then Characteristic shear strength = 0.15 N/mm²

Permissible shear stress = fv/γmv = 0.060 N/mm²

(γmv = 2.5 From Cl. No. 27.4 of BS 5628-1-1992)
