4th Hour

“Are we there yet?” nine year old Vivian yells from the backseat of the car, about an hour
“Not yet, just go to sleep and we will be there in no time” her mother, Heather, who just
turned 32 answers. The Bakers were headed to Telluride, Colorado for a vacation in the
mountains, they live in Norman, Oklahoma so it is around a 14 hour drive. They are staying in a
nice cabin with not many people around so they will have quiet, quality family time together.
Time passes quickly before they realize how close they are. The three kids were starting to get
cranky and fight about all the little things. “Kids quiet down now, we’re almost there.” Bradley,
34 year old father, says calmly to his kids. Along with Vivian in the back seat is her sister
Harper, who is only seven years old and their older brother Conner, who is eleven.
They pull up to the cabin they are staying in for the weekend and meet Arlo, the man
renting it out to them. “Welcome to Colorado, here is the key to the cabin you will be staying in
for the weekend! Since this cabin is brand new, you are the first family to ever rent it out! If you
have any problems please call the number I left on the counter inside. Enjoy your vacation!” As
Arlo drives off in his run down car, they go to take a look inside the two story, four bedroom, log
cabin. When they first walk in, there is the main room with a tv, couch and awesome view of the
mountains, not far from the main room is the kitchen. In the kitchen is a door that leads to the
back of the cabin out onto a deck. There is also one bedroom on the first floor of the Cabin,
which the parents are sleeping in. “I wanna see the room I’m staying in!” Conner yells. They
head upstairs to see the kids rooms, which are also very nice. There are not any doors that lead
outside or any balconies on the second floor, probably for safety reasons. “Okay we better go get
our bags out of the car so we can settle in.” mom says. They had already packed all the food they
would need for the weekend so they would not have to make the drive to town for anything.
They finally get settled in and are all in the main room watching tv, like any typical
family. “Hey look at this!” Conner says as he notices the Amazon Alexa on the coffee table.
“I have seen many commercials about that on tv!” his mom answers.
They tell Alexa to play their favorite songs, tell many jokes and funny stories. Before
“Alright, we better get to bed so we aren't tired tomorrow.” mom says to the kids, and
“But mom, we like talking to Alexa!” the kids say in their whiny voices.
The kids know when she uses this voice it means they better do what they are told and
they head up to their rooms. “You guys can take showers in the morning, just get your pajamas
on right now, I will be up there in a minute.” she says as they head up the stairs.
your information and do weird things.” she turns and says quietly to her husband.
She agrees and heads upstairs to make sure the kids are in bed and kiss them goodnight,
They go by Harpers room first, help her get her pajamas on and tuck her in. Before they
leave they turn on the tv that is in her room and flip on the hallway light so she does not get
scared. Next they stop by Vivians room, she already has her pajamas on and is in bed on her
brand new iphone she just got for her birthday. “Goodnight sweetie!” they both say as they are
passing her room. Once they get to Conner's room he is already passed out, they turn off his light
and head downstairs to their bedroom. In about five minutes they are already in bed and almost
“Uhm, nothing.” he answers her, confused. “I just heard you laughing” she responds. “I
wasn’t laughing” he says. “You’re just hearing things, it was probably Harpers tv.” he goes on.
“Get some sleep” he says before they both finally fall asleep.
“Rise and shine” Bradley yells into each of the kids rooms the next morning. They wake
up to the sun shining through their windows and the smell of bacon. Of course they all love
bacon so it does not take them long to get up. They scarf down their breakfast and instantly go to
the main room to talk to Alexa. “You all need to go take your showers and get dressed, I was
thinking we could get out of the cabin today and see all the mountains.” their mom tells them.
They sigh and head upstairs to get ready. A little while later Heather says “I don’t know why
they all like that silly Alexa so much.” partly talking to herself. She goes to relax on the couch
while Bradley is taking a shower when she smells something weird, then blacks out. After
Bradley is ready he heads to see why Heather has not came to the room yet, he finds her passed
out on the couch with no pulse. “Kids! Get down here” he yells. They all come running down.
“The door won’t open.” Conner says as he is struggling to get outside. All of a sudden the
whole house goes pitch black. “Conner that isn’t funny, this is serious.” his dad yells at him.
“It isn’t me dad.” Conner says. By this point Vivian and Harper are both near tears and
scared to move. A loud thunder roars. “What is that smell?” Vivian says in a disgusted voice
about ten second before they all dropped dead as well. Arlo comes in the next day, when the
family was supposed to be leaving, and finds that Alexa has taken over the house and killed the
five people that were staying here with a chemical released from her speakers. “Try to get rid of
me and this will be you too.” “You take orders from me now, clean up these bodies and get
another family staying here.” she says to Arlo. “This is the first family to go, but not the last”
