Textbook: Mechanical Vibrations

What is Mechanical Vibration ?
Vibration is a mechanical phenomenon whereby oscillations occur about
an equilibrium point.

The oscillations may be periodic such as the motion of a pendulum or

random such as the movement of a tire on a gravel road.

Vibration is occasionally "desirable". i.e tuning fork, the reed in a woodwind

instrument or harmonica, or mobile phones or the cone of aloudspeaker is
desirable vibration, necessary for the correct functioning of the various devices.

More often, vibration is undesirable, wasting energy and creating

unwanted sound – noise. i.e. vibrational motions of engines, electric motors, or
any mechanical device in operation are typically unwanted.

Such vibrations can be caused by imbalances in the rotating parts,

uneven friction, the meshing of gear teeth, etc. Careful designs usually minimize
unwanted vibrations.

How About EARTH?
 Circumference of the Earth at the equator is 25,000
miles.

 The Earth rotates in about 24 hours.

 Earth at the equator without moving, you would see

25,000 miles pass by in 24 hours, at a speed of 25000/24
or just over 1000 miles per hour.

 Multiply by cosine of your latitude to see how fast the

Earth is rotating where you are.

 Earth is also moving around the Sun at about 67,000

miles per hour.
Course objectives:

Upon completion of this course, students are expected to be able to:

1. Model and analyze one degree of freedom systems.

2. Model and analyze multi degree of freedom systems.

3. Identify unwanted effects of vibrations in a dynamic system.

4. Design ways to isolate or minimize unwanted effects of vibrations from a

dynamic system
