Paper #2

With the amount of technology we have today such as social media, news media, the

internet and many more forms of instant communication it is so easy for each and every

country to grasp the trends of others and put them into their own communities because

they find that it would be beneficial for their society. Globalization is happening all over

the world as we speak right now so it is no news that other countries have caught on to

what we have been doing in the United States, it happens every single second of

everyday. It’s in the car that you drive, the food that you eat, the clothes that you wear.

We don’t think about it here but when you put into perspective that coke has made it to

China and a Mcdonalds in Russia, it's crazy to see the influence that our culture has on

others.

When analyzing the statement, you get those big name franchises Coke and

Mcdonalds. Mcdonalds and Coke are 2 of the biggest Global franchises that this world

has. You see advertisements online and during huge sports events, merchandising that

people where globally. The thing is with these 2 global franchise power house’s you

won’t only find them in the first or second world countries, you will find them

everywhere, including in third world countries, people have seen the logo’s, heard of the

products, and it is because it has expanded that much and made a huge impact on the

culture that everybody lives in. These culture spreads are things that are done naturally

where people gladly accept the new culture coming into their lives and ultimately the

communities that they live in. But the thing is, it is only not with these 2 brands, I see
the foreign car companies taking stride in the car business in America, the eccentric

clothes companies doing the same thing, we accept globalization for what it is because

it’s what makes us human, it's part of life especially with the fast forms of

communication that we have nowadays. I think that with military colonization, they like

to focus on the use of force and violence to make those people succumb to the culture.

Usually you get this military colonization, it comes at a time of war, the violence, the

hatred, the overwhelming feelings that come with war. Military likes to send the troops

into countries that we aren’t usually familiar or close ties with. We send them into this

one place and force feed them this culture whereas these franchises are using natural

globalization and the invisible hand to drive these people to take on this culture and

embrace it and make it part of their lives. So that is why I believe Barber when he says

“McDonalds in Moscow and coke in China will do more to create a global culture than

military colonization ever could”

I think that some global trends that have led to this prediction started were started all the

way back when Athens went on their conquest to dominate most of the European

continent and tried to go after China. Ancient writings and history books told how the

Athenians would go into these foreign territories and tried to force feed the Roman

Catholic culture to them and if they rejected it, they would slaughter them, and if they

accepted it, they would claim them as now part of their own. People have never been a

fan of the outside world trying to come and take what is there’s and force something

new upon them. Also I think that the positive trend of information and branding started
in the medieval times when these conquesters actually went to conquer more land from

the last people of Ancient Greece and spread Christianity. They went to conquer the

people’s land but instead they failed on that and left with knowledge of Greek

Philosophers, paintings and art, also trade. It has been a trend since we know that

natural globalization helps our lives in ways we don’t even think about and that

colonization is always looked down upon. I think that is possible/desirable to create a

global culture, if you make a franchise or brand big enough and use mainstream media

to get it out there and they enjoy it, your set. I think the biggest desire of it would be to

get your franchises name to world and make more business. I think that some

drawbacks would be knowing when to enter the so called the “market” or the

mainstream of a global culture. You could enter to early and nobody is going to take it,

or you enter to late and people already have their eyes set on another culture to find

fond of. Another drawback would be trying to do too much and force the culture, you

have to let it be natural, let people accept your idea for what it is.

In conclusion I believe that global culture is a driving force for the world we live in today,

it influences all the things we do in life and own. I think that global culture should be

natural, I also think that military colonization is the worst way to spread culture and it

only leads to bad things. Last point is that without the global culture is what makes the

world what it is today, but I also think that there are positive and negatives of cultures

we learn, but the learning is what makes us accept and change cultures to our own.
