Field Report: Black Culture Center

Introduction

We went to the black culture center on Feb 21th. It was located in the Purdue campus

on the third street. Although I have already study in Purdue for one and half semester,

I have never been there before. This time I went to their my classmate of ENGL 111

with our professor, professor Bush. Before I really enter the Black Culture Center, I

used to think it was just a museum which contain all history of Black in Purdue

University. But when I visit it, It actually doesn’t like what is in my imagination.
Experience

I have never imagined that in the black culture center, there will be anything else except

the exhibition. But it actually it’s a center for everyone who is entering to communicate

with each other about everything they want to talk. There is two levels in the black

culture center. On the first floor, there is a room for the black contribute in the

development of Purdue. Go through the each contribution which made by black people

to Purdue, I am really honored that today I have become one of member in the Purdue

University, I have chance to make contribution to Purdue, even to the entire world. And

there is also a activity room on both level, the one on the first floor, there is comfortable

sofa and it really a good place to meet friends, and talk about the idea we have. On the

second floor there is a iTap computer Lab, that’s really space to do some research by

using the internet. The most interesting part is the library. Inside the library, they do

have lots of books and the special is they also have some collection of video and tape

about the black culture. There is a large reading room with windows on the other side

of library. Doing some reading at there is really a great experience. It is a good choice

for myself to read some book about the history in that library. That fits my academic

goals, which is I want to learn more about the American history and culture. I believed

the culture about Black and the history of Black are really important part of American

history. It will help me to approach my goal.

Reflection

After visiting the Black Culture Center, it really made me surprised about it. I used to
think it was only a boring museum about the black history and culture in Purdue. But

this is really a great place for myself to achieve my language and culture goal. For the

culture, it really shows the contribution that the black people made for Purdue

University. It actually shows that the American’s value, hard work. Everyone in the

Purdue University should work hard, not only to make contribution to the Purdue, but

made contribution to the world we lived in. And the black culture center is really a good

community to learn the culture and history about the black in Purdue in American. For

the language goal, it’s a great community to meet new friends with different culture

background and talk about anything we want to share. The environment there is opening

and comfortable.
