CFD Project: CFD Simulation of Heat Sink and Turbulent Flow Objectives 1. Understand the unique nature of fluid dynamics problems, including its governing equations, variables, and boundary conditions 2. Know how to create quality mesh for CFD analysis 3. Know how to apply the boundary conditions for CFD analysis 4. Perform CFD modeling and analysis of flows in complex domains using ANSYS Workbench 1. Problem specification The heat sink shown below has a square base of size 22 mm × 22 mm × 2 mm and consists of an array of square pin-fins, each of size 2 mm × 2 mm × 8 mm. The pin- fins are separated by a gap distance of 4 mm in each direction. Determine the pressure and velocity distributions of the flow of air over the heat sink at room temperature of 25°C. Suppose the square base of the heat sink is in contact with he ground. The upstream air has a velocity of 10 mm/s, and the air in the downstream passageway is at atmospheric pressure.

2. Problem specification Determine the pressure and velocity distributions of the flow of water inside the following circular chamber. The chamber has a depth of 2 m. Assume nonslip boundary conditions at the walls. The velocity of water at the inlets is 10 cm/s, and the outlets are at atmospheric pressure. (use 3D fluid flow (CFX)) ➢ Using the best mesh determined from (1), run the case using appropriate settings for (a) a standard k-e or (k-omega ) turbulence model and (b) a realizable k-e or ( k- omega) turbulence model. Select the turbulence model and reason out. Determine which model gives the better prediction.

While doing the assignment the following questions should be answered 1. What is CFD? 2. What are the limitations and disadvantages of using CFD? 3. Why is it important to correctly define the computational domain for the fluid-flow problem? Give an example. 4. What is the consequence of using a very fine mesh (i.e., a very large number of cells) compared with using a coarse mesh (i.e., a small number of cells)? 5. Is finite-difference more suited for structured or for unstructured mesh geometries? Why? 6. What is an iteration process, and how is it performed? 7.
