Easter Seals: be a mentor, become a friend

When most people
see Goodwill, they think
of a second hand clothing
store, but Easter-Seals
Goodwill is so much more.
Easter-Seals Goodwill
runs a program called
GoodGuides; in this
program, volunteers ages
16 or older are matched
with local youth as a
mentor. The GoodGuides
has three different mentor
programs that volunteers
can participate including
activities like hanging out
with a younger youth and
being a mentor for them,
going to the Wing’s Charter
School for lunch with the
youth, or being on the Teen
Advisory Board.
Being a mentor outside
of the school environment
gives the youth a chance to
create a bond with a teen

Ridge High School are no
longer minors and
now have the right to
vote. 2010’s election
for the governor
of our great state
of Idaho pits the
current governor,
Republican, Butch
Otter, against the
Democrat, Keith
Allred. Both have
solid cases for why
they should be in the
capitol building after
the November 2nd
Election Day.
The most
important issue for
many of us is the
education funds
being cut. Allred
points out that Otter
could have avoided The Magic Valley is strewn with election signs encouraging voters of all ages to get out and part in their future and

At risk youth find it easier
to connect with someone
their own age, because it
becomes a challenge for
them to tell an adult how
they feel because they see
an adult as someone who
wants only what’s best
for them. The role of the
mentor is to be supportive,
advise and guide the youth,
and create a friendship
with them.
This mentoring doesn’t
take a lot of time; it’s only
a few hours a week and
it gives them a chance to
connect with the youth
and become someone they
look up to. There are tons
of activities the mentor and
youth can do including;
going shopping, playing
basketball, or just hanging
out.
There is also another
type of mentoring called
GoodGuides Lunch-Time
Mentoring. This mentoring

interest, teens can still
help out by being a part of
the Teen Advisory Board.
The Teen Advisory Board
meets every three months
for one to two hours. This
program gives local youth
controlled every aspect
of Idaho for decades, this

Opinion: hunt-
ing is necessary
to control animal
populations

Hunting has been
necessary from the
beginning of time. It has
been necessary for survival,
for management of animal
population, and in some
cases, it is needed for
safety. Hunting is necessary,
but there are those who
disagree.
Some, like Riane
Richards, junior, say,” I find
hunting very offensive
because it is shooting a
defenseless animal, and is
not a necessity for survival
anymore, we have stores.”
Others such as Emily
Grindstaff, junior, “Don’t
mind hunting as long as
hunters don’t shoot does
and fawns,” and some
believe in hunting 110%,
such as Sean Hughes, junior,
Sara McLain, sophomore,
Brandon Bradshaw, junior,
Jake Warner, senior.
Some people do not
like hunting because they
believe that hunters can
just go out into the field
and mow down animals,
the animals have no chance,
and that hunting is just
to kill. This is not true. Ask
anyone who hunts, hunting
is no picnic. In most cases it
requires hours of searching,
driving, and hiking just to
see an animal one is after.
Not to mention the walking,
hiding, crawling over
mountains, through bushes,
around various other forms
of obstacles and getting a
proper shot off the animal
that is found.
As for hunting just for
the fun of it or “just to kill,” I
would be lying if I said that
no one does that, because
people do but I guarantee
that this is not the case for
most hunters. Hunting is
something many people
love for the challenge,
seeing the wildlife, getting
away from the city and the
stress.
Many hunters do use
the animal that they harvest
as a trophy. For others it’s
a great accomplishment;
people also like the meat
that comes from their
animal. One can make stew
meat, hamburger, chops,
sausage, etc. and there are
laws that one cannot just kill
the animal, skin it, and let
the meat go to waste.

org, only 7% of Americans
hunt, which is about 38
million, the average hunter
spends $1,638 dollars per
year on hunting, and each
year 6 million deer and
thousands of bear, moose,
elk, antelope, cougar, and
wolves are harvested.

Everyone experiences
those mornings, when one
wakes up feeling like the
whole world is falling to
pieces, you didn’t get that
paper done, or stayed up
all night trying to do it and
woke up late for school,
you know it is going to be
a long day . Now you have
to go through a whole day
of school, and maybe have
an after school activity so
now you have too much
work and not enough time
to accommodate that work.
That’s when the stress level
is turned up.
I know the feeling, that
feeling that no one wants to
deal with, stress. I also have
figured out some ways to
help that unwanted stress
stay away. This is what I do.
I will tell myself that I’m not
the only one that has to
go through this; there are
lots of other people in the
school that has to deal with
the school work. Also I will
just do the most important
things first, and the school
work that I can wait a day
on, I do.

Halloween: does it ever get old

late, so I don’t. I need sleep
to get through a whole
day of school and sports.
Sometimes just going to
bed helps, but it doesn’t
relieve the stress. Then on
weekends when I have
lots and lots of homework
to do, I usually end up
procrastinating. This isn’t the
thing to do, I procrastinated
on this article and I have
been stressed out about it
all week, because I didn’t
know what to write. So
don’t procrastinate, get it
done it will help. If you need
to take a break from it, listen
to some music, or go work
out.
Those are usually good
stress relievers, but the best
stress reliever is just getting
the work done so you don’t
have to worry about it and
then the stress will never
come.

one of my most enjoyable
holidays as a kid. Once
October rolled around my
family picked out the best
pumpkins we could find
to carve. We would buy

size candy to hand out to
kids and most importantly,
decide what to dress up as.
As time passed by more
and more kids stopped
participating in the holiday
fun. They all felt that they
were too old or too cool to

followed what their friends
did and not participate.

Winter is rapidly
approaching. Before you
know it, snow will be
blanketing the mountains
in a white layer of awesome.
Winter sportsmen will
flood up to the slopes.
Which leads us to the
question: Which is better,
skiing or snowboarding?
A l t h o u g h
snowboarding seems to be
the more popular choice,
the two sports are not
all that different. There
structure and technique,
but one still requires
excellent coordination and
balance in order to truly
experience the sport. Either
way, you’re sliding down
a hill on a stick. What else
could you possibly ask for?
Having experienced
both, I can honestly say I
prefer to snowboard. My
first time on a snowboard
provided me with a rush I
hadn’t experienced before.
The second I latched onto
the board, I automatically
felt more comfortable. I
am not claiming that
better than skiing, that is
just my personal preference.
Everyone has their own
opinion. Logan Hufstetler,
junior, says, “I have never
tried skiing, but if I had the
choice to do either, I would
choose snowboarding
because that is what I’m
most comfortable with.”

Passing the
time in
PASS room

Delving into the depths
of In-School-Suspension,
I have made it back to the
regular classroom and am
happy to be here. When I
was first assigned this story,
I was thinking, “This is going
to be so much fun. I’ll get
out of class and get some
homework done and catch
up on some reading.” Boy
was I ever mistaken.
The morning of D-
day, I said my farewells to
my friends and family and
trudged through the hall-
ways to the tiny room off to
the side of the lunch room.
As I took a deep breath and
walked into the room, Mr.
Coulson looked up at me
and asked why I was there
and directed me to my iso-
lated cubicle.
Not being able to see
anything unless I turned
around, I felt a strong urge
to bolt and run back to
class. Mr. Coulson handed
out a survey to get a feel
of what the person was go-
ing through and how their
home life and social life
went. I filled out the survey
and started the one page
essay assigned by Mr. Coul-

Teenagers today are
under enormous pressure
to get ahead in life. We’re
in exponential times where
technology is more ad-
vanced and many young
minds are coming up with
bright ideas for the future.
Most important though,
are the students striving to
push themselves; attending
school, but at the same time
keeping their jobs.
Teachers don’t realize,
but the average student
has an enormous schedule
outside of school. It’s a lot to
handle: going to work and
then arriving home late at
night trying to get the load
of homework done and fi-
nalized to do the same thing
over again the next day. Stu-
dents sometimes need to
take a break to be ourselves
and go out for some fun.
They are great students and
work an immense amount
of time. Students go to
school to maybe go to col-
lege, but some need to start
saving up money to be able
to go to college and keep
on climbing higher. They
can’t do it when they’re

In the first 15 minutes
of class, Mr. Coulson came
around and started collect-
ing cell phones. Reluctantly,
I gave my cell to the teacher
and returned to my work
sad and lonely. The feeling
of isolation set in quickly
but I was ready for the long
haul. Before the other kids
and I finished with our pa-
pers, we were called in to
clean the cafeteria after
breakfast.
After washing every ta-
ble and sweeping the floors,
we were assigned the task
of wiping down every seat
in the cafeteria. If you have
ever been in the cafeteria,
it’s pretty easy to know how
time consuming the pro-
cess of seat wiping can be.
I got dizzy after one or two
tables since I was looking
down and walking in circles.
After the cafeteria was
satisfactorily cleaned, we
returned to the PASS Room
and got started on some
class work teachers emailed
to Mr. Coulson. After a while,
Mr. Coulson told us to turn
around so we could have a
little discussion. He talked to
us about why we were here
and how we could change
overwhelmed. The students
have jobs because they just
maybe have bills to pay.
Some students want to get
a head start for the coming
year when seniors start their
college year because they
need the money. Having a
job does give more oppor-
tunities.
Some of the biggest ac-
tivities in school are sports.
Mix it all up and large quan-
tities of students wake up,
go to school, play sports,
go to work, and then finally
go home to do some home-
work and go to bed to wake
up to do it all over again.
Students should be able
to go home before they do
anything else important is
to go out and spend time
with their family. They
should be able to arrive to
their house and say hi to
everyone and spend some
quality time with their fam-
ily. Not go home and start
their load of homework not
even being able to hangout
with a friend. Sports are just
one more thing that stu-
dents try and include while
during school to help in get-
ting in the college of their
choice. Sometimes what

they can’t eat because the
lines are so long.
When it all boils down
to it, the main problem with
lunchroom traffic is the lines
and a lack of time. Basically
students have 25 minutes
to eat (averaging traveling
time).

have time to eat it before

our behavior. He wanted to
know what our goals were
and what we wanted to ac-
complish in life. He used
real life examples to show
us how our actions would
affect us later in life while
trying to support a family
and work a job. He read the
class a poem called, Charac-
ter Matters and gave each
student a copy. We returned
to our class work once again
and had enough time to fin-
ish a few assignments while
thinking about our actions.
When Mr. Coulson
looked up and announced
that the class had the privi-
lege to clean up the outside
of the school, I was begin-
ning to wonder why I even
needed to write this article
and how amazing my class
sounded. We walked out
the side door and were
handed individual garbage
bags and instructions to
pick up anything and ev-
erything. Brisk wind bit and
slapped my ears and face as
I reached down repeatedly
to pick up one more piece
of trash. To the very ends
of the school campus and
back, the trash was spread
around and Mr. Coulson
saw every single piece. Not
being able to check the time
because of the lack of a cell
teachers don’t realize is that
homework doesn’t make it
any better to learn a specific
subject. We can’t learn when
our brains are inundated
with so much information
and then we’re up till mid-
night still doing homework.
We’re not computers either
because we can only take
in so much information or
not always does a computer
take in all the information
either.
Understand schools
and teachers, that students
need a life too. Teachers are
probably overwhelmed,
but they never do show it
because it’s what they get
paid for. Students don’t get
paid to do homework, but
they still do try. At times it’s
just too much to take in at
once and students maybe
are being pushed too hard.
Students want to learn,
but having eight classes a
day they don’t need all the
homework. They already
have to go through the lec-
ture all day. They can learn
in school because that’s
what they’re for all day. It’s
to learn and they don’t al-
ways need to do it out of
school either.

the lunch line. I was as-
signed the job to serve soup
in the deli sub sandwich
line.
Every time someone
I knew came through the
line, they would want to talk
and ask why I got put into
the PASS room. Every time
someone wanted to talk,
I would want to talk back,
naturally. Every time I tried
to talk back to someone, the
lady serving lunch would
tell me I couldn’t talk. Frus-
tration set in quickly as I was
shushed at every interval
where I might’ve been able
to talk.
After the deli sub line
dwindled to a couple of
students, I was sent to wash
tables until lunch ended. Af-
ter all the students left the
cafeteria and I was ready to
eat some lunch, we got to
thoroughly clean the lunch
tables and the cafeteria
floor. Every table had to be
wiped down and pushed

eating, it finally got done.
Our sack lunches were
delivered to us and we ea-
gerly opened them to see
a corndog, cold noodles, a
bag of chips, a Rice Krispy
Treat, and milk. After shush-
ing our stomach’s grumbles
for hours the food was wel-
come, we would’ve eaten
anything.
We ate and then we
walked back into the PASS
room and worked on more
class work. In the class,
everyone was in a better
mood now that the food
had been consumed and we
could just relax a bit for the
day. Mr. Coulson allowed
whispered talking through-
out the room and before
long, we were all bursting
into laughter at the jokes
made by a couple of the
PASS room students.
It was more of a discus-
sion time as the class talked
about why they were in the
PASS room and what they
could’ve done to change
their behavior in class. The
discussion had its humor-
ous parts but it also had its
serious parts. Mr. Coulson
kept a good hold on the
classroom volume and kept
the students on subject.
When the bell rang at
3:15, I couldn’t have been
happier. My day of PASS
room was over, and I could
go home and go to sleep. All
in all, the PASS room was an
unpleasant experience and I
wouldn’t want to do it ever
again. It had a few ups but
the majority of the day was
definitely a down for me. I
would not advise anyone
to do anything to be sent to
PASS room because frankly,
it’s not much fun. Be proud
to be a Riverhawk and con-
trol your behavior and your
actions.

returned to the second year
of Canyon Ridge, a few of
them have made some bad
decisions. Mr. Dickinson
went around to every class
and told it straight and
simple: students need to
realize that if they have any
weapons it’s an automatic
expulsion. The school board
decides how long it could
be, from a day up to a year.
Students need to be
smart about the decisions
that they make, but many
students don’t realize that
air soft guns, paintball
guns, and fireworks can
be considered weapons.
“But we also need to
focus on the good things of
our students,” says Principal
Dickinson, “We have
some bad students; that
doesn’t mean the school
is bad. We just need to be
smarter about our choices.”
We have also had more
fights this year than last.

seniors say they have focus,

Belliston. At age 34, Mr.
Belliston has been teaching
for 12 years. He can be seen

school activities. He is the
head honcho of the Student
Council and loves every
minute of it. He also loves
the Faculty Fridays.
Ever since Mr. Belliston
was a little kid he wanted
to be a teacher. Both of
his parents were teachers
and he saw the benefits
kids got from education.
He graduated from Idaho
State University and has
been teaching for 12 years,
10 years at Twin Falls High
School and two years at
Canyon Ridge High School.

the best, so they choose
to leave campus when

or sophomore, or they just

club?
There are lots of clubs
around Canyon Ridge; one
of the main ones being
the Leo Club. In this club,
volunteers spend half
of their day traveling to
elementary schools to help
with sight and hearing tests
for the children. “I like to
do Leo Club because we’re
helping out the community
and I have a lot of fun doing
it.”, was Brandon Collins’
(senior) answer when asked
why he does Leo Club. It is
a great way to get involved,

Hawkins dance approaches,
girls from Canyon Ridge are
brainstorming to figure out
the cutest way to ask their
perfect guy. Many ideas
are overused and guys tire
of the same old poster and
balloons waiting for them
in class. There are a few
ways to ensure that Prince
Charming will respond with
a yes.
The best way to
ask a boy to Sadies is to be
original. Originality shows
that special someone how
much the bashful girl cares.
Take a heart shaped tin or
something able to hold
liquid, and pour water
into it while mixing in red
food coloring. Next, take a
laminated note saying, “Will
you go to Sadies,” and stick
it in the middle of the water.
Let this freeze and become
a solid red heart with the
note inside. Now, it is ready

Moustaches seem that
they have a culture all of
their own. Some people
think that they are hilarious
while others will live or die
by the ‘stache. Moustaches
have been around for a
very long time, and there
are many different styles
of them. They range from
the Hitler to the kind
that English villains had
and even a walrus style
moustache.
The toothbrush
moustache is a very well
known moustache because
it was the one that Hitler
sported. It is an extremely
thick moustache and is
shaved to be about 1 inch
above the upper lip.
There is the pencil
moustache, sometimes
referred to as “mouth
brows”. They have been in
existence for a long time
and are easy to grow and
maintain. This is a very thin
moustache and they gently
outline the lip.
The horseshoe
moustache is a very
popular western looking
moustache. It is also referred
to as “pipes.” The horseshoe
is a full moustache and
runs along the sides of
the mouth to the jaw line,
resembles an inverted
horseshoe. The Fu Manchu
moustache is a lot like the
horseshoe moustache, but
instead of stopping at the
jaw line they dangle below
to go, there will always be
the 30 minute schedule that
will need to be beat in order
to not be late or get swept
up in the new tardy- sweep.

a very thin and narrow
moustache that is divided at
the center of the upper lip.
The whiskers are very long,
but are not bushy. They are
pulled to either side of the
center to give an elongated
appearance. The corners of
the mouth are shaved.

the choir students anticipate
singing their hearts out for
audiences again. With the
addition of new students
and the returning students
from previous years, Mrs.
Goodrich has herself an
extremely strong group.
Teasha Fletcher comments,
“I really love the class, and
love the way Mrs. Goodrich
teaches us the notes we
need to hit in each song.”

dance team is back with
new members and a new
name. This year they are
the Crimson Line Dance
Team. The girls on the team
worked hard all summer
and continue that work
every morning in school,
first period. Their head
coach Natalie Free states,
“The girls are phenomenal!”
Autumn Robison and
Harlee Nevarez, Juniors,
are both captains and are
united in making a cohesive
team. As captains, they
have bigger responsibilities
than just showing up and
doing their best. Autumn
commented, “I think that
our performances reflect
on how well we do as
captains.” Harlee feels, “like

Halloween season
has come and gone. Many
wonder if they had their
fill of fright and horror in
the recent 2010 Halloween.
However, if you were one
of the many who visited
the Albion Haunted houses
this year, your Halloween
festivities were anything
by dull. With not one but
three mansion of sheer
terror, many visitors ended
up in a horror coma for the
night. On a brighter note,
however, the deserted
campus offered a few
new additions this year,
such as a bounce house
and a friendly campfire.

The corn maze was
a great way to get out of
the house and hang out
with friends, even when
you were freezing your
butt off. Although they
were fun during the day,
they were way better at

It’s no secret that
compared to the past
season of 2009; the haunted
houses have changed up
their scene a bit. While still
caring the living daylights
out of those who pass
through, the actors and
houses were themed
differently this year, which
offered new frights for all
visiting. Many rooms in
the mansions gave you the
chills from simply peering
into them, and suspense
was a key ingredient in that
the creators of the mansions
mixed in for spectators’
enjoyment. Many rooms
left you in the darkness,
night; especially without a
flashlight. It always seemed
pointless when people
were running around the
corn maze with a flashlight.
There really was no
reason to not like the corn
maze. People always went
with a group of friends to
try and to figure out how to
get from the entrance to the
exit the quickest, without
cheating. Or we competed
to see who could get from
the south side (entrance
side) to the north side of the
corn anyway through the
corn. Either way it was fun. It

style, the sound, genres,
and technologies have
all become way more
advanced. In the fifties,
sixties, and seventies, bands
like the Beatles, Rolling
Stones, Led Zeppelin, and
Pink Floyd redefined music.
Artists Bob Dylan and Tom
Petty have made similar
lasting impressions.
The biggest change in
music is the genre. Now,
people are more into artists
such as the Black Eyed Peas,
Katy Perry, Bruno Mars, Lady
Gaga, Far East Movement,

Local bands seem to be
popping up all over town.
There are a few bands that
are more notable than the
rest. One of these bands
is Atlantis! Falls Under
otherwise known as A!FU
they play numerous shows
at some of the towns local
hot spots like The Radio
Rendezvous. There are four
people in the band; the
drummer, Jake Jones; the
singer, Graham Hartman;
guitar, Sky Crystal; and
and bands can build a fan
base quickly because of
the internet. That is a huge
change from the past. I’m
just glad that the music
I listen to has withstood
the test of time. Bands like
Journey, Whitesnake, the
Scorpions, and Iron Maiden
are still touring and packing
in big crowds, including
many teenagers, and these
bands continue to record
new CD’s. It doesn’t get any
better than that!”
Music may change at
a constant pace, but no
matter how it changes over
generations, people are
always going to be listening.

In a school-wide survey
determining the best
music to warm up to, the
favorite amongst Riverhawk
students of every genre
is techno. Techno was
developed in the mid-80’s
in Detroit, Michigan, and
was based on European
pop, disco, and electro. It
consists of quick beats and
rapid rhythms that are great
for getting your heart rate
up.
The next highest pick
was hip-hop/rap, an ever-
increasing genre in modern
America. The first hip-hop
songs were formed in the
1970’s in the Bronx County
of New York City, where
the African American and
Puerto Rican cultures had
the highest influence on

The Chronicles of Narnia
is based on a book by C.S.
Lewis that was translated
into English as well as 47
different languages. This
fictional realm is the setting
for animal talk and magic.
The movie is a constant
battle between good and
evil.
Another movie coming
out would be Chain Letter. A
group of friends at Carlson
High School receives
mysterious letters that
makes them decide whether
to open them and complete
what it asks of them, or pass
it on to someone else. How
many students will be left
to suffer the chain letters is
anyone’s guess.
Buried is a movie about
an American truck driver
taken hostage supplied

cell phone. Paul has only
90 minutes to find his exact

In the spring of 2010,
a new sport took storm of
the entire world (well, Twin
Falls). Oop became the soul
reason for eight players and
their millions of fans to keep
themselves alive. “Jufro” was
undefeated going into the
playoffs but failed to make
the championship game
after a controversial call by
the officials in the video
review booth; that distinct
honor went to “Wonder
Bread” and “N,” who made
a solid matchup for the
famous Plunger Bowl. “N”
took home the trophy (a
plunger) after his 21-16 win.
That’s when things
took a downhill turn for
the universe’s top sports
league. Many of the players’
family members were killed
by ravenous fans, home
courts were burned down
in many of the respective
countries that they were
built, and “N” disappeared
from the face of the Earth;
experts and analysts have
reason to believe that he
was in Afghanistan hunting
Osama Bin Ladin, but now
our favorite league has new
life.
It started out as
just a rumor, but after
many strenuous hours of
conversation, the league
has agreed to come back
for a second season! The
top authorities of Oop have
determined that the top
five, in order, will be “N,”

its football, most people
think it’s all about potatoes.
Little do they know that we
have three major college
football teams. Two of which
are in Division 1A (FBS), and
the other in Division 1AA
(FCS). The two FBS teams
are the No. 3 nationally
ranked Boise State Broncos,
and the Idaho Vandals. In
the FCS, we have the Idaho
State Bengals.
First we begin with the
Broncos, they are having
their best season ever so far
with 5 wins and 0 losses, and
they are currently ranked #3
in the nation. The Bronco’s
first game of the season was
their toughest challenge
as they snuck pat Virginia
Tech by a score of 33- 30.
They have also played a
very good Oregon State
team, beating them 37-24.

State has will be against the

Everyone knows about
Tiger Woods’ infamous
scandal that occurred
in late 2009. But since
then, does anyone worry
about rankings and scores
anymore? Or is the focus
still on his personal life.
He returned to the PGA
Tour early April 2010 in The
Masters Tournament, tying
for fourth. Later in April he
participated in the Quail
Hollow Championship,
but was cut from the
tournament after shooting
eight strokes over.
Woods competed in
the Players Championship
May 9, the first three rounds
scoring 70-71-71. While
on the seventh hole of the
fourth round, Tiger was two
over par and left due to a
neck injury, but was back a
month later at The Memorial
Tournament in Dublin,
Ohio. He made the cut, but
finished tied at nineteenth
place, the worst he’d done
in that tournament since
2002.
His next tournament
was the U.S. Open, held
June 17 at Pebble Beach,
California. Woods shot five
under-par 66 on day one,
putting him in first, but was
three over-par on day two,
leaving him tied for fourth.
From late June until the end
of September, Tiger went
on a streak of low scores,
ranking as low as seventy-
eighth, until October, when
he placed second in the
Ryder Cup, shooting two
under-par.
His next tournament is
the WGC-HSBC Champions,
which will take place
November 4, in Shanghai,
China, which will be
followed by the JBWere
Masters tournament and the
Chevron World Challenge.
