Class work #4: Digging into the ESRT KIPP 2015:_________________

“The problem of puzzles are very near the problems of life, our whole life is solving puzzles.”
–Erno Rubik (architect and creator of the Rubik’s Cube)

Aim: Identify characteristics of rocks and minerals using ESRT.

Let me see you work it…(Answer the following Earth Science review questions using your ESRT.)

1. What mineral’s composition is CaCO3?

(1) galena
(2) pyrite
(3) calcite
(4) olivine

2. Which of the following would cause metamorphic rocks to turn into sediments?
(1) solidification
(2) melting
(3) weathering and erosion
(4) compaction

3. What is the texture of the igneous rock basaltic glass?

(1) glassy
(2) fine
(3) coarse
(4) very coarse
Listen up close while I take you backwards… (Answer the throwback questions below.)

Flip it and reverse it… (Highlight the most important statement from the passage below. Be ready to answer questions!)
Did you know that rocks have ages, like people? Even though they are not living things, there are young rocks and old
rocks. The oldest known rocks are 3.9 million years old! They are the Acasta gneiss rocks from Canada. There are three
major kinds of rock: igneous sedimentary and metamorphic. Igneous means fiery. These rocks are made when hot
molten magma or lava cools and solidifies. Metamorphic rocks are rocks that have changed over time due to intense
heat and pressure. Sedimentary rocks are rocks that are made from the slow hardening of sediment (pieces of other
rocks) into layers. Rocks are (in a sense) born and reborn as they move through the rock cycle changing from one kind
of rock into another. They are all continually recycled over and over again. (Source: 1,000 Facts on Planet Earth)
I’m on the request line…(Explain what the quote of the day means and/or how it connects to today’s lesson below.)

One time exclusive…(Joke/Riddle of the day.)

Answer: Because of his coffin! (Get it…coughin’…coffin)

Inquiry:
Look at the two rocks on your desk. Record some physical properties that you can observe below.

Class Notes/Independent Practice:

Next week we are going to be exploring ROCKS and minerals (obviously a major part of ROCK Star Science). We will be
using the following reference tables next week during this exploration:

Rock Cycle in Earth’s Crust

Scheme for Igneous Rock Identification
Scheme for Metamorphic Rock Identification
Scheme for Sedimentary Rock Identification
Properties of Common Minerals

Learning to use the ESRT (Earth Science Reference Tables) is like learning a new language because there is so much new
vocabulary. It’s also like knowing your way around your own kitchen. You need to know just where things are so you
can access them easily. Today we are going to focus on getting to know our way around the ESRT so that when we are
studying rocks next week, this part comes easily to us. Today we are just going to focus on three of these reference
tables. They are listed below.

EXTRA TIME?
Review your diagnostic and circle questions you would like to go over. If we have time at the end of class, we can do
some together!
