Every teacher is a language teacher; science is not an exception.

Today’s workshop was about teaching science to students who do not have English as a first
language. I learned that cognitive academic language can take 7 years for ELL students to get to
grade level. I learned ways to ease the learning of second language students such as using Greek
suffix and prefixes for teaching biology terms if the student has a background near those
languages. I learned ways to make handouts easier to comprehend for students and what words
are difficult for English learners to understand such as: apply, categorize, hypothesize, record,
persuade, discuss, scan, compose, etc. I was shown that using images and oral as well as written
instructions is key for these students. Using technology where appropriate can really ease
students learning in English.
