13 Register Boxes
A Replace the word in bold with a synonym that is more common in everyday
English. Then find the Register box and check your answers.
1 It was courageous of Rachel to tell her parents the truth about that night.

Register Boxes
Objectives: To learn more about the correct words to use in everyday English
Dictionary skills: Finding the correct words in everyday English in the Register boxes
Tasks: A Substitute a word for the correct word in everyday English
B Find a word in everyday English to substitute a given word
C Write your own sentences with a partner
Procedure
A First of all, students think of a more commonly used word to replace the word in bold in each
sentence. They can then compare their words with their partner. Students then find the Register boxes
of the words in bold to check their answers.
B Students can work alone or in pairs. They try to think of a commonly used word for each of the
words in the box, and then check in the dictionary to find out if their words were correct.
C Students work in pairs to write sentences using the words they found in exercise B. Monitor as they
work to check their sentences are correct.
