LESSON SEQUENCE:

In this lesson, students were introduced to several important words that they would use throughout the
unit. Students were introduced to the words and then asked to find “formal” definitions for their words in
small groups. To do this they used their computers to look up the definitions of the words. Once they had
come up with those definitions they were asked to then continue working in their small groups to put
together “6th grade” definitions of those words. In the next lesson we used those definitions to play a
vocabulary game in which students thought of words that came to mind when they heard the vocabulary
words, and got a point for each member of their group who had the same word.

REFLECTIONS:

Overall I think that this lesson works well. We only had 8 words but students were able to engage with all eight of the words.
By being able to read the “formal” definitions and then turn those into 6th grade friendly definitions through their discussion,
it allows for the students to make meaningful connections to the words that they will be using regularly over the course of
the next 7 weeks. Lastly, while the game that we played took place in the next lesson, the game allows for students to
continue to engage with the words that they are learning and relate them to other things that they are more familiar with.
