STOKES AND CODEWEST - DO NOT COPY OR DISTRIBUTE WITHOUT PERMISSION ASME B16.5-2003 Pipe Flanges and Flanged Fittings NPS % Through NPS 24 1 Scope 44 General This standard covers pressure-temperature ratings, materials, dimensions, tolerances, marking, testing, and methods of designating openings for pipe flanges and flanged fittings in sizes NPS % through NPS 24 and in rating Classes 150, 300, 400, 600, 900, 1500, and 2600. 1.2 References Standards.and specifications adopted by reference in this standard are shown in Annex H. 2 Pressure-Temperature Ratings 2.2 Flanged Joints ‘A flanged joint is composed of three separate and independent, although interrelated ‘components: the flanges, the gasket, and the bolting, which are assembled by yet another influence, the assembler. 2.3.2. Mixed Flanged Joints Ifthe two flanges in a flanged joint do not have the same pressure-temperature ratings, the rating of the joint at any ternperature is the lower of the two flange ratings at that temperature. 2.4 Rating Temperature For any temperature below — 20°F, the rating shall not be greater than the rating shown for — 20°F. 2.5.2 High Temperature A temperatures above 400°Ffor Class 150 and above 750°F for other class designations, flanged joints may develop leakage unless care is taken to avoid imposing severe external loads and/or severe thermal gradients. Or both, 2.6 System Hydrostatic Test Flanged joints and flanged fittings may be subjected to system hydrostatic tests at a pressure not to exceed 1.5 times the 100°F rating rounded off to the next higher 26 psi, 3 Component Size 3.4 Nominal Size The size of the flange or flanged fitting covered by this standard is its nominal pipe size, NPS. Use of ‘nominal’ indicates that the stated size or dimension is only for designation, not measurement. COPYRIGHT © 2008 - J. W. COLEY, J. W. Reducing flanges and reducing flanged fitings shall be marked with the applicable NPS designations as required by paras. 3.2 and 3.3. 427 Ring Joint Flange ‘The edge (periphery) of each ring joint flange shall be marked with the letter R and the corresponding ring groove number. 5 Materials 51 General P Flanges and flanged fittings covered by this Standard shall be castings, forgings, and (for blind flanges only) late as listed in Table 1A. 5.1.1 Application Criteria for the selection of materials are not within the scope of this Standard COPYRIGHT © 2008 ~ J. Flanged assemblies using low strength carbon steel bolts should not be used above 400°F or below - 20°F. 5.3.5 Bolting to Gray Cast Iron Flanges (c) Where Class 300 steel flanges are bolted to Class 250 cast iton flanges, the gaskets should be made of Group la materials. 6 Dimensions 614 inimum Wall Thickness For inspection purposes the minimum wall thickness tn of flanged fittings at the time of manufacture shall be as shown in Tables 9 and 12 (Tables F9 and F'12 in Annex F), except as provided in para. 6.12, 6.1.2 Local Areas 2) The area of subminimum thickness can be enclosed by a circle whose diameter is no greater than 0.35 Vd t,, where d is the inside diameter as defined above and ta is the minimum wall thickness as shown in the tables listed in para. 6.1.1 b) The measured thickness is not less than 0.75 ty 6) The enclosure cices are separated form each other by an edge-o-edge distance of more than 1.75 Vd te 6.4 Flange Facings 6.4.5.1 Tongue and Groove and Small Male and Female ‘The gasket contact surface shall not exceed 125 iin. roughness. 6.4.6.2 Ring Joint The side wall surface of gasket groove shall not exceed 63 pin. roughness. 6.4.5.3 Other Flange Facings Either a serrated concentric or serrated spiral finish having a resultant surface from 125 yin. to 260 pin, average roughness shall be furnished. ‘COPYRIGHT © 2008~ J.
