Rationale for Standard 6: Assessment
Artifact name: Analysis of student learning
Standard:
The teacher understands and uses multiple methods of assessment to engage learners in their
own growth, to document learner progress, and to guide the teacher’s ongoing planning and
instruction.
What the Standard means to me:
In order for learners to show their growth, the teacher needs to create multiple means of
assessment that engage each individual learner. The teacher keeps documentation of each
learners growth and uses that data as feedback to move forward in instruction.
Indicator:
6 (a) Balances the use of formative and summative assessment as appropriate to support,
verify, and document learning.
Description of the artifact:
My analysis of student learning for my teacher work sample is a chart with each learner and
their scores on the various assessments we did throughout the unit. In this unit, I gave the
students preassessments, formative assessments, and summative assessments for each
learning goal and then I averaged their scores together to give them an overall grade on the
particular goal. After creating a chart for each learning goal I then created a narrative that talks
about how each student did on the goals. What goals were most successful and challenging and
why I thought that. I discuss the way I assessed each student, what kinds of accommodations I
had in place, and also the type of feedback I gave each student. Lastly, I talk about how I
thought the students did overall for the whole air and weather unit.
Rationale:
The charts for each learning goals shows that I can use multiple means of assessment in order
to track learner progress throughout a larger unit. It is clear that I am aware of the differences
in pre, formative, and summative assessment and that I use them in appropriate ways. The
narrative talks about how I use these assessments and how I let these results drive the rest of
the unit. The narrative also talks about how these assessments helped support the students in
realizing what they were learning about and putting all of that learning in one place. The
assessments also helped support me in knowing when it was time to move on, or when it was
time to take a step back due to lack of understanding. I am proficient in this standard and
indicator because I use various means of assessment to support learning and drive lessons.
