Ambera Mutevelic Dream Job 1/31/19

After graduating from Nichols, I hope to begin a career in public relations. More specifically, in

the end I hope to become a public relations manager. This position relys mostly on experience and

judgment, however most PR managers have a bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, Communications,

Journalism, English or Marketing with a PR or Advertising concentration, as well as 6-8 years of

experience in the field. Although not mandatory, some PR managers may become certified through the

Public Relations Society of America or the CFRE International. As a public relations manager, I will be

expected to maintain a favorable image for my clients though various campaigns and programs, as well

as pitch stories and releases to the public, while handling media coverage by answering any questions.

Since I am minoring in marketing, I will most likely be assigned the development and production of

marketing and advertisement campaigns. Along with these duties, being the manager of a department

would leave me in charge of the budget, staff and overall maintenance of the department.

I believe that the minimum level of education should be set to a bachelor’s degree in one of the

fields mentioned above. Having no set standard would leave applicants with no qualifications aside from

experience competing against those who have been working towards this career for years. Without

allowing someone to display their skills, there is no way to judge how well they will handle the position.

Having a set bachelor’s degree requirement in either Public Relations, Communications, Journalism,

English or Marketing would reduce complications in the hiring process, as well as create more well-

rounded managers. I do not believe that the currently optional certificates should become mandatory

but remain as something that someone can work towards for themselves and not a requirement. This

would help applicants with the available certificates stand out. Although most companies promote their

staff up to a PR manager after their experience has taught them the necessary skills, I believe the

company should invest in the individual’s education and send them to receive a bachelors if they do not

already hold one. Having a well-educated head of a department would encourage respect and

confidence from coworkers.

As a start pay for a public relations manager, the average annual pay is about $70,412 and the

average hourly pay is about $33.85/hr. I would manage this money by investing about 10% of my

earnings in stocks and bonds. I hope to move down south and own a small house, so the expenses that

come along with doing so would require a large sum my pay. I would like to own quite a few animals,

including a ball python and two blue Russian cats, as well as build an indoor koi pond and bring my

leopard gecko. Traveling has always been something I wanted to do, so I will hopefully be taking at least

one relatively inexpensive vacation per year with my friends.
