Introduction
In this paper I want to talk about the field of astronomy, the history and
future of the field, the importance of astronomy and it’s everyday impact in
your day to day life, and the steps to take to get started in that field.
History
First I want to talk about the history of astronomy and how that has
impacted the world to this point. Astronomy is most likely the oldest of the
natural sciences going all the way back to Mesopotamia and early
European settlers. Archeologists have found bronze disks dating back to
8,000 B.C.E, that were used to track the stars as an early calendar. This
find predates any other known calendar by about 5000 years.1 This find
revolutionized our thinking of how early European cultures functioned and
showed us that they were a lot more advanced than we had originally
thought. Another ancient calendar that we are familiar with is the Roman
calendar. It was the first calendar that went away from lunar calendars and
went the the modern calendar we are familiar with today. All ancient
calendars were important as it told them when they needed to plant crops
and when to harvest which was vital for the survival of those people.2
Conclusion
Astronomy has grown exponentially and the advances are cutting edge in
the world. Astronomy is a very fascinating science that has more impacts
on tomorrow than you realize. If you want to work in an ever evolving field
that gives you a new challenge every day and you are up for the challenge.
Consider becoming an astronomer.
