!
Central Focus (What is your goal teaching this lesson, what will they accomplish, what
is your next step?)!
L#1 - In this lesson students will collaborate to brainstorm and construct a mural of their
community. They will work together to create people they know (friends, family, helpers,
heroes) and places they go (community has/wants) with pre cut out shapes using
collage techniques.!
!
L#2 - Students will reflect on what is missing in the mural and continue to create pieces
for the collaborative art work. Students will have the option to continue to create pieces
or begin help attaching them to the mural page. Students will consider overlap and size
of objects with teachers guidance while attaching pieces to the mural.!
!
L#3 - Students will connect their work to that of Aminah Robinson. They will have the
option to add finial touches or 3D material (yarn and buttons) to the piece to make the
style more related to Aminah’s style of work. If students feel the piece is complete or
feel fulfilled in their contribution they will be able to transition back into stations to work
on their own art work or art work with each other to continue the theme of collaboration.
At the end of class students will reflect on collaborative piece and share what they
experienced and learned from working together to make a collaborative mural.!
!

Classroom steps (How are you going to accomplish your goal?)!
!
L#1 —!
Start:!
- Students are greeted as they enter the classroom. They are then asked what makes
a community. Examples of community are given: Clinton, school, family, friends,
classroom. They are then asked to think of Clinton - places they go, people they
know. At this point brainstormed ideas are written on board. !
- Brief demo had on how to construct people/places from shapes using collage with
magnet shapes on white board. Students are then directed and invited to build
people/places at the pre set up station with shapes. !

3
Grade: Kindergarten Lesson Title: Community Mural

Do:!
- Students begin constructing community using scissors out of construction paper. !
Finish: !
- Before class ends teacher calls students over to look at pieces made. Question
posed: What do we notice? Who / where is missing? Students are then informed that
the following class they will either continue to construct pieces or help place pieces
on the big paper for the mural. !
!
L#2 —!
Start: !
- Students are greeted as they enter classroom and are instructed to sit around mural
paper. Students are reminded on what they did the previous week “Working in
collaboration to make a community: places we go, people we know, things we need.”
With pieces laid out students are asked what are we missing? Students are invited to
create those missing pieces or are invited to collaborate in attaching things. Students
are shown overlap. Students are dismissed to either keep creating or begin help
attaching pieces to large mural paper.!
Do:!
- Students are either creating what is missing from the mural community or helping to
attach the pieces already made to large mural paper.!
Finish:!
- Students are called to center to review mural piece, students can comment on what
they created and why they felt it was important to add to the community.!
!
L#3 —!
Start:!
- Students are greeted as they enter classroom, they are instructed to sit around mural
piece. Students are shown Aminah Robinson again and asked how can we include
her style into our piece? Students mention or are called to notice how Aminah uses
fabrics and buttons. Students are then invited to add details or “finishing touches to
the piece”. If students feel fulfilled in their contribution they are permitted to return to
personal play/care work and begin transitioning back into stations.!
Do:!
- Students are adding final details to the mural piece. This can be things the community
is missing or material Aminah Robinson uses in her work. If students aren’t
contributing anymore to the collaborative mural they are to be creating art work at
studio stations.!
Finish:!
- Students are invited to look at final art work, here they can comment what they
contributed and what they learned from the process. !
!
Assessment (How will they show understanding?):!
L#1 - Students will demonstrate understanding through participation during discussion
at beginning of class. They will then show skill while applying previous knowledge in
using collage to construct people and places from basic shapes. Students will then

reflect on work as a whole (consideration to the pieces coming together like a puzzle,
collaboration) during final discussion about what they notice and what is missing.!
!
L#2 - Students demonstrate understanding through the continuation of construction and
acknowledgement of things in their community that is missing. They are also able to
show understanding of overlap through the process of attachment to the mural.
Students are also showing skills in collaboration as they work together to complete the
piece.!
!
L#3 - Students will demonstrate understanding by connecting their work to Aminah
Robinson. During this stage they will consider what finishing touches the collaborative
piece may need including a consideration of new material. Students will also have the
option to transition back into stations which will exhibit their understanding of studio
behavior and expectations which was established previously. This includes set up and
clean up. Students then will share what they contributed to the piece during group
discussion and what they learned during the experience.!
!
!
What’s Next (What does this transition into for next lesson?):!
L#1 - Next time students will take pieces they made and practice overlap and consider
composition when applying to a large collaborative mural piece. Students will have to
work together to choose placement of pieces and decide what needs to still be
constructed and considered for the following day of production.!
!
L#2 - Students next time will consider how to connect more to Aminah Robinson’s work
through material choice. They will also consider how to make a work feel finished by
contributing to finishing touches and adding details to the piece.!
!
L#3 - Students will be adding finishing touches to the piece, if they aren’t they will be
working to show they know how to properly transition back into a choice classroom
through set up and clean up processes.!
