ICE AND RAIN PROTECTION - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

1. General (figure 1)

A. The ice and rain protection system provides a means of preventing or

disposing of ice formation on various parts of the airplane, as well as
protecting the windshield against rain effects.

B. Ice protection subsystems are provided for the following areas: wing and
empennage leading edges, engine air inlet, air by-pass duct, propellers,
windshields, pitot-static tubes, angle-of-attack sensor and side-slip
sensor. Pneumatic deicing subsystems are installed on wing and empennage
leading edges as well as on engine air inlet and air by-pass duct only.
For the remaining areas, electrically heated de-ice anti-ice elements are
employed.

C. The windshield wipers provide increased forward visibility during rain or

snow.

D. The monitor checks the operation of pneumatic deicing and propeller de-
icing subsystems only.

E. Post-Mod. S.B. 120-030-0027:

(1) The ice protection system is provided with an ice detector that is
used to detect and indicate the formation ice.

2. Empennage and Wing Leading Edges (Ref. 30-10-00)

A. The leading edges of the vertical and horizontal stabilizers and of the
wings are ice protected through pneumatic boots. Three deicers are
installed on each wing, two others on each horizontal stabilizer side and
one on the vertical stabilizer.

B. The wing and empennage leading edge deicing subsystem uses air bled from
the engines, which is directed through a pneumatic control system,
inflating and deflating the deicers, in a predetermined sequence and
periods.

3. Engine Air Inlet (30-20-00)

A. The engine air inlet and the forward region of the air by-pass duct are
each protected by inflatable rubber deicing boots, also using air bled
from the engines and being controlled by a system similar to that for the
wing and empennage leading edges.

4. Pitot/Static Tube (30-31-00)

A. The three pitot tubes, which incorporate the static ports, are heated
through electric heating elements fed from totally independent circuits.
The pitot/static tubes are three, being installed two on the right side
and one on the left side of the airplane nose.

5. Angle-of-Attack and Side-Slip Sensors (30-32-00)

A. Each angle-of-attack and side-slip sensors are electrically heated by an

independent system. The sensors are located one on each side of the
airplane nose (angle-of-attack sensors) and on the fuselage skin, over the
cockpit (side-slip sensor).
The heating is provided by two elements: one for the equipment case and
another one for the vane.

6. Windshields

A. The front windshields are each heated by totally independent systems (ref.
30-40-00). There are copper elements imbedded in the windshields which
work as electric resistors providing the required heating.

B. Electrically operated windshield wipers increase visibility during rain

or snow (Ref. 30-41-00).

7. Propellers

A. The propeller blade leading edges incorporate imbedded electric heating

elements for de-icing purposes.

8. Maintenance Tasks Related to the Maintenance Planning Guide (MPG 120/721)

A. Table 1 references all on-airplane tasks associated with this system and
required by the Maintenance Planning Guide (MPG).

B. Figure 2 shows all accesses required for the accomplishment of the tasks
in table 1.
