1. Go to FILE and PAGE SETUP. Make sure you have chosen PORTRAIT and the boxes
2. Go to FORMAT and LINE SPACING. Check off DOUBLE. This will skip lines.
4. Go to INSERT and HEADER AND PAGE NUMBER and PAGE NUMBER. Click the
TOP box on the RIGHT. This will number your pages beginning on the SECOND page.
Step #2
Type the essay question you chose exactly as it is on my essay question sheet.
Step #3
Look at your evidence, type the main idea/argument of your COMPARE paragraph. Remember
that the compare paragraph talks about SIMILARITIES. Make sure that your COMPARE
paragraph answers the question you chose.
Consult your evidence gathering assignment to help you. You do not need to use all of the
evidence. Choose one piece of your evidence to help you come up with the argument.
Step #4
Now, find the one piece of EVIDENCE you will use for this paragraph from your evidence
gathering sheet. Type them here, please include the who? Where? And when? Information.
Step #5
Figure out which type of evidence you have. (DIALOGUE, DESCRIPTION, ACTION,
THOUGHT) and type that under your evidence.
You will need to somehow introduce this piece of evidence. To do this, start off with the when
and where related to the DIALOGUE, ACTIONS, SPEECH, or THOUGHTS. Then go to the
who? If you need more than one sentence to introduce your quote that is fine. Do NOT use more
than two, Here are some starters you can use, Choose the ones that APPLY to your evidence.
The line in between the QUOTATION MARKS are for EXACT WORDS from the book.
If you do not see quotation marks, PARAPHRASE. Write the page numbers in parentheses.
During the scene at the ________ when, _________, the reader first meets
_______________________________, who is described as _________________ (pg. )
During the scene at the ________ when, _________, NAME OF CHARACTER thinks to
himself (herself): “_______________________________” (pg. )
STEP #6
So far you have the M (Main Argument) and the E (Evidence). Now we need the A
(Analysis/Explanation)
Using what any knowledge you have from your daily life, or knowledge about the characters in
the book, you need to show me how your evidence PROVES or SUPPORTS your argument,
STEP #7
Now, paraphrase the M for your L sentence to make a nice hearty MEAL paragraph.
STEP #8
Remember that the CONTRAST paragraph talks about differences. Make sure that your contrast
paragraph answers the question you chose.

evidence. Choose one piece of your evidence to help you come up with the CONTRAST
argument.
STEP #9
Repeat STEP #s 4, 5, 6, and 7 to create your first MEAL paragraph for contrast.
STEP #10
Repeat STEP #s 8 and 9 to create your second MEAL paragraph for contrast.

● 1 compare paragraph (with MEAL)
● 2 contrast paragraphs (2 MEALS)
