cedes dumu-ci-2.-a=mdr likziti, adopted son, which eliminates
the suggestion that it means adopted son.
Cols. I 1 and I 11 of the reverse discuss words connected
with liturgical practice and for that reason the information
is valuable. First in I 1 6 is entered the word sir=sirhu,
m e l ~ d y . ~Here follow the interesting terms: s i r - a ~ a g , ~the
holy song, of which the elative form occurs in d N i n A sir-azag-
dzig zu, "Nin2 who knows the holy songs," Gudea, Cyl. B 4, 6.
arag here differentiates sir from sir used in the sense of secular
song. sir i a - m u n , song of loud cries. The term occurs also
in Gudea Cyl. A. 27, 12, Zag-bi nam-Zub sir-ia-mun, "Within
which there is incantation4 and loud song." sir nam-nar, song
of the singer's art, in which a special kind of singer ndru, pos-
sibly choir boy, is intended. sir-nam-gala, song for the psalm-
ists. sir nam-lub, song of absolution(?). We possess one
example of this class of song in ZIMMERN,K.L., 65, sir nam-
Su-ub dNidaba, a song of absolution(?) to Nidaba. The con-
tents of this song in any case d o not suggest an incantation
( l i p t u ) . sir nam-erim-ma, song of the curse. Since sir is
generally employed for liturgical melody, and incantations
were excluded from the liturgies, it is difficult to determine
the kind of song intended here. sir-gid-da, a long song, a term
applied to a particularly long melody, as the Dublin text, pub-
lished in this series Vol. X, pt. 2 . sir-sag=~irhu reltzi, first
melody of a liturgy, the chief melody which gave its name to
'Note ui=ridd, to follow, drive, and the noun rid*, heir, ridih, heiress.

Incantations in the ordinary sense were excluded from the temple. The word nnmfab is
probably employed here in the sense of song which brings absolution from sin. See also Gudea
Cyl. A. 27, zo immir-bi immir-ia-mu*, "Whose wind is a raging wind," a phrase employed of

of S". At this point the text begins to repeat the entire sylla-
bar. Examples of this kind of repetition are numerous in the
school texts a t Nippur, but it is difficult to explain in the later
periods, for a Sumerian text book of this kind would hardly
have been used in the Semitic schools. T h e tablet probably
represents a copy of an early text.
Obverse I is entirely gone. T h e first legible sign in Col. I I
is idim, fifth sign from the end of Sb CoI. I. T h e text here
restores the end of Sb I and the beginning of Sb 11. Note the
sign megidda=Sahttu, sow, already known from a Berlin variant,
No. 523. In Sb I 1 6 the sign for amurrA is identical with that
for Akkad, proving an original historic connection between
Accad and the Amorites. At this point the Rev. IV sets in as
a variant. After a long break Col. 111 begins with Sb 11 47,
labar. T h e sign M E S = S b 11 54 occurs but once; i. e., kiiib=
rittu, and k u n u k k u , seal, is omitted. This is correct, since the
original sign for k u n u k k u was DUP and M E S is a late sub-
stitute. Sb 11 65 agargara, water animals, is omitted and prop-
erly so since the sign N U N + H A properly began with N U N
in a slanting position nu-un-te-en, CT. XI 49, 28. Hence it
does not belong here. The sign T U R = t a r b a s u occurs twice.
According to our text the signs d u b = n a p Z ~ u and balag=
balangu are not originally identical. Note that alad=Sb I 1 I 4 1
has not the determinative dingir. For Sb I 1 1 45 sa-a=DIRIG
=.sriwu, be red, the Nippur text has K A L ! A B occurs but
once. The sign A K A = S b IV 4 occurs but once. T h e sign
gala is not gunufied but identical with K U M . The sign B A D
is entered thrice. Note the original(?) form of kisal. The
sign for &rub and kisiwz is not the one given in Sb IV 52 f. T h e
sign ab=arhu is omitted. T h e sign LIPES occurs only
twice, but M E S I is entered twice. Sb V 65 is omitted. After

Here WEISSBACH'S text breaks away. T h e text in 4502
has two signs between I D and ma?, bar which correspond
perhaps to gu-ur and deifz? in CT. XI 15a 37 f. These signs
appear to be B A D and X.
Our text restores S"l Su-[US] = S U and ni-i=Siif B I L =
puluhtu. See also POEBEL,PBS. 104 IV 12 and CLAY'SYale
Syllabar 290.
In Sb H U L is entered thrice but in our text the third sign
corresponding to bi-ib-ra is not H U L but a similar sign.
Ni. Go61 published as No. 54 repeats a section of S" Col. I
several times. This tablet has in each case B A D and SU for
B A D and X before MAS. Hence di-ei-Su in CT. X I 15a 38
must be regarded as a value of the sign SO repeated three
places below. gu-ur is then a value of B A D , a sign entered
twice in Sb a t I 64 (idim) and IV 22 (bad, U S ) = REC. I I . I t
is possible then that Ni. 4502 entered B A D thrice. Perhaps
CT. XI 15a 37 is to be restored ti-il=BAD=balatu (REC. I I ) .
Hence the sign B A D appears in three places in S h n d the
Assyrian form results from a confusion of three classical signs.
Ni. Go61 R. I has instead of I D thrice only one sign, which is
a peculiar form of I D and Col. I I I has a sign for I D resembling
that of Ni. 4502
