Wisdom and Love

Romeo and Juliet claim they love each other ever since they first saw each other. Now,

a few hours after meeting, they want to get married right away. Due to this, Romeo and Juliet

need good mentors to guide them the right way and talk them into the right decision. Without

mentors to help guide them in the right direction, they could end up regretting what they’ve

decided or result in conflict. Romeo and Juliet need guidance because they are rushing into

their relationship, their marriage, and things will end up going bad. The two only love each other

for their looks, but they need to also love each other for who they are as a person before they

get married to each other forever.

Friar Laurence may agree to marry Romeo and Juliet, but he still wants to look out for

Romeo and wants him to make the best decision for himself. Friar Laurence explained that a

flower can be a medicine or a poison, even though it is a beautiful thing (lines 23-26). He also

explained that love is precious, and that good and evil exist in all people. Friar said to Romeo

that he will only marry him and Juliet because it could help the conflict between the two families

(lines 90-92). Friar Laurence shows concern towards Romeo, and gives him advice before the

marriage to be careful and show he really loves Juliet (lines 9-15).

Juliet’s nurse has taken care of Juliet since she was a baby. To the nurse, Juliet is

practically her daughter and she always watches over her and keeps her safe. The nurse loves

Juliet so much and so she goes to speak to Romeo to not only schedule a time for the marriage,

but to make sure Romeo will not back out and that he truly is ready and loves Juliet as much as

she loves Romeo (lines 142-147). The nurse is a good mentor towards Juliet because she talks

to both Romeo and Juliet to see where they are and what they want in this marriage. The nurse

likes to tease Juliet, knowing she loves Romeo so much and wants to know the news of what he

said (lines 21-22, 38-44). The nurse is very caring and careful to watch over Juliet and make

sure she knows what she is doing, marrying Romeo so early.

In conclusion, Friar Laurence and the nurse can be good mentors. Friar Laurence isn’t

the best mentor for Romeo to listen to, but he is still careful to advise Romeo on what he is

getting himself into and that he needs to be sure of his actions. Friar Laurence is a good mentor,

but not as good of a mentor as the nurse is for Juliet. The nurse loves Juliet as her own

daughter, so she will do anything for her. The nurse makes sure to watch over Juliet, where she

checked to see if Romeo was worthy and sure of his actions herself. The nurse puts her life out

there to help Juliet and protect her and lead her into the right direction for her sake.
