Executive Summary
The purpose of a community Blood Drive is to provide blood for victims of natural

disasters as well as to aid hospitals. The blood collected is separated into its

components: red cells, platelets, and plasma. Which can be used individually for

patients with specific conditions. Originally hospitals did not have blood banks. Many

received blood from direct donations. This made it harder for people to receive blood

during surgery. The American Red Cross began to look for ways to allow blood to be

taken in advance and be able to be used when needed. They found the best ways to

preserve it. In addition, they found ways to freeze the red blood cells and take out the

platelets. Currently, they collect blood in many different ways. One way is through Blood

Drives. Blood Drives are sessions where certified nurses who are a part of the American

Red Cross go to specified locations, which is determined by where volunteers decide to

host it. They take about 1 pint of blood and test tubes. These Drives can take place in

schools and public facilities. From these collections, the American Red Cross takes the

Blood and processes then later distributes it The blood collected by the American Red

Cross makes up 40% of the nation’s blood supplies. During the processing, the Whole

Blood Donations are separated into red cells, platelets, and plasma. The plasma can be

processed to use to help blood to clot. The red cells and platelets are processed to

ensure that the person receiving the donation will not have a reaction. They are put in

individual packs. Individually, they have different storage lives. Red cells can be stored

for 42 days. Platelets are stored for 5 days. Plasma can be stored for a year. The test

tubes are tested to see the blood type and also check for diseases. If there is a disease

detected, the blood is not used. The blood is distributed when hospitals call because

they have a shortage.

Introduction

A. Historic background of the selected community service or charity

The American Red Cross was founded on May 21,1881 by Clara Barton. The red cross

hopes to “prevent and alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies by

mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors.” Our Manual will focus

on the Blood drives run by the American Red Cross in association with different schools

and organizations. The blood donations associated with the red cross began during

WWII in an attempt to supply combat medics. After the war, most hospitals did not stock

blood donations but instead transferred blood directly from donor to patient. This would

eventually lead to the creation of the first regional blood drive located in Rochester, New

York.

B. Description of the local DECA chapter, school and community

The Riverdale chapter of Deca is based at Riverdale High School in Riverdale, Georgia.

The focus of our chapter encouraging and training students for a future in Marketing and

Management. Glen Alexander has been the sponsor of our Deca chapter for the last 4 years.

Over the past few years, we have participated in numerous fundraisers including sells chocolate

boxes and opening a school store the proceeds of which we use to finance trips and

competitions for the club.

Riverdale high school is in the Clayton County public school system and is headed by

Principal Jamille Miller-Brown. This school was founded in 1977 and currently has upwards of

1100 students. We hope with this club to redefine Riverdale High school as more than a low-

income institution. We work to aid our community by providing services to the students and

adults alike in order to better their future in years to come. While the environment around our
school may not be the best we continuously do work to beautify our surroundings. Our school

and community may be old but each and every day we work to better our surroundings.
CONTRIBUTIONS TO A NEEDED COMMUNITY SERVICE OR CHARITY

A. Purpose of the project

The purpose of a blood drive is to collect a large amount of blood to be able to be used

to save a life. The blood is needed to help those who are in need of blood transfusions

due to injury. Some people need a specific component of the blood to improve existing

health conditions. These donations are very important during emergencies, like during

natural disasters. We aim to collect a variety of blood types in order to supply local

hospitals as well as aid any natural disasters that could take place in the near future.

B. Rationale for selecting the community service or charitable project

We selected this project because we have helped run the blood drive at Riverdale high

school. We have assisted the blood drive over the course of the past 2 years. We have

seen the different aspects and various complications associated with blood donations.

The more people we get to sign up the more blood that can be collected. Many people

although they wish to donate, are unable to. We picked this specific project in hope to

spread the word and get more people to help and donate.

C. Description of the benefits of the project to the chapter and chapter members’ understanding

of leadership development, social intelligence and community service

This community service project helps chapter members, like us, as it allows us to

develop leadership skills that will be essential to us in the future. It allows for us as
members to take initiative for those that we are over. Advertising, signing up people,

checking in those who came to donate, and communicating with the nurses and Red

Cross staff helped us improve our social intelligence and our overall communication

skills. Our knowledge about community service was increased tenfold by allowing us to

experience first-hand work in an actual environment that we as individuals can use in

the near future to better our skills.

IV. ORGANIZATION AND IMPLEMENTATION

A. Organizational chart, member involvement, and job description

In the blood drive, there are various volunteering opportunities. The first would be signing
people up. The next opportunity would be to check everyone in. This is where we check the
appointments and prepare them to be examined to see if they are going to be able to donate.
They are given a water bottle and information to read before going to be tested. The next
position is getting and returning students to class. They are escorted to ensure that they do not
pass out. Before they get to leave they are given a juice and snack to help them recuperate
from the loss of blood.
B. Description of the project and documentation

C. Impact goal for the beneficiary

The beneficiaries are able to receive the blood donations can save their lives. The bag can save
up to 2 lives. It also gives jobs to people in the community and several opportunities for those
who volunteer. It allows
