Monument, Emails Show.” The New York Times, The New York Times, 5 Mar.
2018, www.nytimes.com/2018/03/02/climate/bears-ears-national-monument.html.

The point of this article was to show why President Trump wants to shrink Bears
Ears National Monument. Within the land there's a lot of oil and natural gas deposits
which can be used to raise revenue for public schools. President Obama in 2016
included about 110,000 acres of these trust lands, eliminating the potential for resource
sales, but Trump ignored this and ultimately reduced the monument.
Lisa Lipton and Eric Friedman wrote this article to inform people on why
President Trump is trying to reduce the land of Bear Ears. The article informs the
readers why Trump is sweeping away Obama-era environmental initiatives, which is to
expand oil, gas and coal development. This article was written relatively close and is still
accurate.
This article was written by Eric Friedman and Lisa Lipton. The article appeared in
the New York Times March 5, 2018. Both of these authors are credible. Lisa Friedman
is a reporter for the NY times on the climate desk. She focuses on climate and
environmental policies and has covered several international climate talks. Lipton has

Trump is reducing Bears Ears and what people think of it. Specifically to how it’s going
to benefit and harm our country.

2018, www.nytimes.com/2018/05/05/business/patagonia-trump-bears-ears.html.

The point of this article was to explain how Patagonia is suing President Trump in
order to save Bears Ears. Patagonia advocates for environmental protection, fair trade
and stricter labor standards and was in fear that Trump administration would open up
protected areas to drilling and mining. Many people have accused Patagonia of using
politics to sell their clothing Since they have gone against the Trump administration they
have gained several enemies, such as fossil fuel companies.

I will also include how the Trump administration is responding to all of the negative
comments about shrinking the national monument.

Trump has drastically reduced the size of Bears Ears by 85% and Grand
Staircase Escalante by 39%. It has been said that the land will be used for fishing,
hunting, and many other activities such as oil drilling. The five Native tribes of Bears
Ears are taking a stand and have filed a lawsuit in the US District Court against Trump.

If Bears Ears is ever destroyed, it will be gone for forever and it’s important for
everyone, not just Native Americans, that we save it.

disrespected Obama, nature, the environmental community, and 5 mountain tribes

(Hopi, Zuni, Navajo, Ute, and Ute). Bears Ears is important to many people and to hear
the way the President speaks of it and to see the actions he takes against it are
disheartening. People are beginning to protest to show their strength and dedication to
protect Bears Ears.
This article is calling on people to take a stance against Trump and to protect the

Tamez, Sonia. “This Land Is Our Land: Save Bears Ears National Monument.” Native
American Rights Fund, 7 Dec. 2018,
www.narf.org/this-land-is-our-land-save-bears-ears-national-monument/.

Bears Ears has cultural and scientific significance. It’s sacred to 5 tribes, has
hundreds of thousands traditional cultural landscapes, sacred sites, and archaeological
and paleontological resources. President Obama established the 1.35 million acres
Bears Ears Monument in December of 2016, but President Trump shrunk it by about
1,150,860 acres. There’s not a clue on what the plan is with the cultural landscape
outside the new designation and it’s protection isn’t clear yet.
This article is a call for people to step up and take action to protect the Bears
Ears cultural landscape, advocate for new legislation to expand it, work with tribal
organizations, and restore the original monument. It informs the audience about the
unravelling of the monument.
The author, Sonia Tamez, is a Latina artist who has served as a federal agency
tribal liaison, a long-term land management plan coordinator, consultant for inter tribal
and native organizations, and has had many other jobs. She is a strong supporter of the
tribes and indigenous groups. The source of this article s NARF (Native American
Rights Fund) and was posted on their site. NARF is a reliable source for this topic. It’s a
non-profit organization that uses existing laws and treaties to ensure that U.S. state
governments and the U.S. federal government live up to their legal obligations.
This article will be used to talk about the creation and dismantling of Bears Ears.
I will also use it to talk about about the cooperation with the Tribes and the prioritization
of protection for the monument.
