WOMAN AND CORPORATE GHANA

INTRODUCTION
Makola market was constructed in Accra in the year 1924 which was the main wholesale and
retail place in Accra. Located next to the Kwame Nkrumah memorial park over the High Street,
and bounded by Kinbu, Thorpe Road and Pagan Road. Makola has several collections of
products and services sold and rendered respectively. Some of the products sold in Makola
market include but not limited to vehicle parts; fresh produce; manufactured and imported
foods, clothes, shoes, tools, herbal and orthodox medicines; pots and pans; jewelry – including
imported cheap Chinese jewelry and locally handcrafted beads. The market is dominated by
women traders.

The in-depth interview was an encounter with Mrs. Comfort Oduro-Nyarko from the Makola
Institute. Makola Institute is a nongovernmental organization formed to assist market women
with the necessary skills and knowledge needed to be able to make their informal businesses
thrive.
