Introduction
Illustration 2 g00450746

The auxiliary hydraulic controller controls the following parameters.

• The engine speed and operating flow of the main pump.

• Abnormal operating conditions

• Error codes

• The hourly basis of each auxiliary mode

The auxiliary hydraulic controller operates with the following three main outputs.

• The throttle signal to the main controller

• PWM signal to the proportional reducing solenoid valve which controls the negative flow
control pressure to the main pumps

• Signal to the on/off solenoids that control the one-way hydraulics and two-way hydraulics

The auxiliary hydraulic controller has four working modes that can be programmed. There are two
programs for one-way hydraulics and two programs for two-way hydraulics. The auxiliary hydraulic
controller determines the working mode. The auxiliary hydraulic controller will process two inputs.
One input is the position of the attachment switch in the cab. The position of the proximity switch on
the ball valve. Each working mode has a setting for the engine speed and the main hydraulic oil flow.
In order to program the controller, refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Auxiliary Control (Pump Flow) -
Test and Reprogram" .

The auxiliary system is activated when the hydraulic activation control lever is engaged and the
rocker switch on the control lever is activated. Once the rocker switch on the control lever is
activated, the signal is sent to the auxiliary hydraulic controller. The auxiliary hydraulic controller
sends the signal to the corresponding on/off solenoid that is located under the main control valve.
When the solenoid valve is activated, full pilot pressure is allowed to flow to the corresponding end of
the auxiliary spool.

When the auxiliary spool is shifted, the spool blocks the "PAT" port that is located on the back side of
the main control valve. The "PAT" port is directly in line with the auxiliary spool. The pilot pressure
which is supplied to the "PAT" port will not drain when the spool is shifted. The pressure switch that
is located at the port senses the pressure at the port. The signal from the pressure sensor is sent to the
auxiliary controller. If the controller receives the signal from the rocker switch on the control lever,
the controller will display an error message. The controller will also destroke the pumps in order to
prevent excess flow into the hydraulic system. Other errors within the auxiliary electrical system are
also detected by the auxiliary hydraulic controller.

After the signals from the control lever and the pressure switch are received, the auxiliary hydraulic
controller controls the engine speed signal which is sent to the main controller. The auxiliary
hydraulic controller has determined the working mode. The auxiliary hydraulic controller has
determined the corresponding engine speed setting that is programmed for that working mode. The
engine speed setting for the working mode is compared to the engine speed dial switch in the cab. The
auxiliary hydraulic controller determines the lower engine speed setting. The controller sends the
signal to the main controller.

The auxiliary hydraulic controller also controls the main hydraulic oil flow by controlling the PWM
signal to the proportional reducing solenoid valve. The correct signal is sent to the proportional
reducing solenoid valve in order to provide the desired negative flow control to the main pumps. The
main pumps respond to the negative flow control pressure and the pumps deliver the correct flow.

Operation
Illustration 4 g00333558

The left side of the machine is the location of the auxiliary hydraulic controller.

The auxiliary hydraulic controller has the following operating modes:

Inactive Mode - The auxiliary controller is not operating. In the inactive mode, the controller will
display all of the settings that correspond to the four work modes.

Active Mode - The controller is operating. The display will show the selected work mode. The active
mode is activated when a control switch for an attachment is depressed. The switches may be on the
right or the left implement control lever. The switches could also be on the foot control switch.

Note: When the auxiliary controller is energized, the first information that is displayed is the version
of the equipped controller. Any major changes that will affect the operation of the controller will
result in the change of the digit to the left of the period. Major changes could include software or
hardware changes. Minor changes will result in the change of the two digits to the right of the period.

Inactive Mode

While the auxiliary controller is in the inactive mode, the controller will display all of the settings that
correspond to the four work modes. Each work mode consists of the following settings:

1. The first setting provides the hourly basis of the work mode. The first digit indicates the
number that is assigned to the active work mode. The second digit shows an "h" which indicates
hours. The last four digital positions are the number of hours. This setting can not be revised.

2. Another setting is the operating engine speed. The first digit indicates the number that is
assigned to the active work mode. The second digit shows an "E" which indicates the engine
speed. The third digit and the fourth digit indicate the engine speed setting. The engine speed
setting regulates the engine speed in order to correspond to one of the ten positions of the
engine speed dial when the hydraulic attachment circuit is activated.

Note: The engine will operate at the slower speed when the hydraulic attachments are operated.
The two speeds are set by the auxiliary hydraulic controller and the engine speed dial. The
operator should always set the engine speed dial for the engine speed setting of the active work
mode.
The fifth digit indicates an "H" for high flow mode when the rabbit side of the attachment
switch (1) is depressed. When the tortoise side of the attachment switch (1) is depressed, an "L"
for low flow mode is displayed.

The sixth digit indicates a "1" for one way flow when ball valve (2) is in the OPEN position.
When ball valve (2) is in the CLOSED position, a "2" is displayed. The "2" that is displayed
indicates two-way flow.

3. Another setting is the operating flow. The first digit indicates the number that is assigned to the
active work mode. The second digit shows an "F" which indicates flow. The third digit and the
fourth digit indicate the setting of the flow. The display shows a percentage of maximum pump
flow. The engine speed and working pressure will limit the available flow. The fifth digit and
the sixth digit represent the parameters of the hydraulic flow.

Pushing the "ADVANCE" key (18) will enable the user to scroll through the different settings for
each work mode.

Active Mode

The engine start switch must be in the ON position in order to power the electronic controller. The
attachment valve stem must shift in order to be in the active mode.

While the controller is in the active mode, the controller will display only the information for the
presently selected work mode. The keypad is inoperable.

Program

When the controller is activated, display (17) will show the program. The index is used in order to
monitor the changes that are made on the settings of the four work modes. The index will be changed
by one unit when a setting is changed in the programming mode. The program can also be displayed
by pushing the "ENTER" key (19) and then pushing the "ADVANCE" key (18) .

Programming

In order to access the programming operating mode, use the "+" key (20) and the "-" key (21) . Enter
the following password:

+, +, -, +, -, -, followed by the ENTER key (19) .

Note: The "ENTER" key (19) validates the password. If the password is entered incorrectly, the
"ENTER" key (19) will reset the sequence so that the password can be entered again.

Note: The password is intended in order to be used by a qualified Caterpillar dealer and service
people. Be discrete when you are using the password.

If the correct password is entered, the controller will first display the operating engine speed setting of
the current active work mode. The display (17) will show the operating setting for the hydraulic flow
of the current work mode when the "ADVANCE" key (18) is depressed.

Note: Only the settings of the current work mode may be altered. Change ball valve (2) and change
attachment switch (1) to the appropriate position in order to change the settings for other work modes.

Change the engine speed or change the setting of the flow by performing the following steps:

1. Use the "ADVANCE" key (18) in order to select the setting that needs to be changed.

2. Use the "+" key (20) or the "-" key (21) in order to increase or decrease the setting value. When
either key is depressed the setting is increased or the setting is decreased by one unit. In order to
return to the original setting, push the "ENTER" key (19) and then push the "-" key (21) .

3. In order to save the new setting, push the "ENTER" key (19) and then push the "+" key (20) .
The last digit on the display (17) will change from a "P" to a "S". The change in the last digit
indicates that the setting has been saved.
Note: In order to change two settings, both settings need to be revised before the settings are
saved. The two settings include the engine speed and the setting for the flow. The programming
index will increase one unit instead of two or more.

4. In order to exit the programming mode, push the "ENTER" key (19) and then push the
"ADVANCE" key (18) . If the programming mode is left without saving the new settings, the
controller will revert to the original data.

Note: The auxiliary hydraulic controller will leave the programming operating mode
automatically after approximately five minutes if no keys have been pushed. This "Timeout"
function will not store any data that has not been previously saved. When the controller leaves
the programming mode, the display (17) will show the programming index.

Error Codes

The auxiliary hydraulic controller will recognize some abnormal operating conditions. Five error
codes are:

Error 1 - There is an open circuit in the NFC reducing valve. The NFC is the negative flow control.

Error 2 - The output to the auxiliary hydraulic controller NFC proportional reducing valve is short
circuited to ground.

Error 3 - Auxiliary hydraulic controller AC1 or AC2 outputs are short circuited to ground. The AC1
and AC2 outputs are for the solenoid ON and the solenoid OFF .

Error 4 - Auxiliary hydraulic controller HAM2, R1 or R2 outputs are short circuited to ground.

Error 5 (version 2.20 or later) - There is a malfunction of the activation pressure switch. The
activation pressure switch is located at the PAT port of the auxiliary stem. When this error code is
displayed, the maximum pressure is sent to the NFC port of the main pump in order to output the
minimum flow.

The error codes will appear on the display (17) . The error codes have priority over the other display
modes. The error codes do not affect the logic and the functions of the controller. The last error code
that is detected will be displayed.

Error codes 1 and 2 can appear in both the active mode and the inactive mode. Error codes 3, 4 and 5
appear only when the controller is operating. Because the controller is monitoring the signal from the
NFC proportional reducing valve, error codes 1 and 2 will disappear when the problem has been
corrected.

Error codes 3, 4 and 5 will disappear at the next operation of the auxiliary hydraulic controller if the
problems have been corrected. If several error codes are detected, it is best to solve the first error code
that is displayed. Operate the circuit in order to verify if the other error codes are displayed. The
controller can display only one error code at a time.

Note: In case of error code 1 and 2, the controller will do one of the following steps:

• Deactivate AC1 and AC2 output signals.

• If the signal for the activation pressure switch is ON, the logic of the controller will change the
engine speed to dial 1 position. The change will protect the attached tool.
