Solomon has practiced engineering for eleven (11) years. His engineering experience has been
majorly horned in the consultancy Industry while working with MBW Consulting Ltd from 2006 upto
2015 where he participated on numerous consultancy assignments as a design engineer, cost
engineer and supervision engineer.

Solomon has completed conceptual, feasibility and detailed engineering designs for numerous
infrastructure projects such as multi-storey buildings, bridges, highways, water supply schemes and
other structures. He has also participated in the preparation of project proposals & tender
documents; drawing and drafting; procurement of contractors; and construction supervision
activities.

Project: Construction of Nyamabuye 7MW Hydro Power Dam

Civtec Africa was selected as the preferred bidder for the design and build
of a 7MW Hydro Power Dam on River Kaku for Elemental Energy.

The components of the project include a Powerhouse, Tail Race Canal,


Water Intake, a Rock-fill Dam, Ecological Flow System, Concrete Spillway,
Head Race Canal, Forebay, Forebay Overflow, Penstocks and a Power
Evacuation Line.

Civtec will be responsible for the engineering, supply, and construction


including commissioning of the entire Hydropower Project. This will include
all temporary and permanent construction infrastructure (cofferdams,
dewatering, access roads, camp site and permanent residential facilities)
required for the completion of the Works.

Project Cost: U$ 15 million (initial contract value)

 Responsible for project functions included but not limited to Project

Project: Supervision of Maintenance Works for Forty Four (44) selected
National Roads in Northern Uganda

The project was part of a maintenance backlog that was initiated by


Uganda National Roads Authority.

Project: Design and Construction Supervision of Bugoma Drilling Camp
and Kingfisher Oil Exploration Pad for CNOOC Uganda.

CNOOC Uganda Ltd received a production license for the Kingfisher


production area to start oil production. This required the design and
construction of a drilling platform and the establishment of a drill camp to
support the drilling operations.

The project involved earthworks and foundation bases construction for a


ZJ70D Oil Exploration drilling rig. The site was stripped of vegetation and
cut to level before placing a 400g/m 2 geo-grid followed by a 400mm thick
layer of Murram. Foundation bases made from grade 35 and 500mm thick
were also constructed to support the derrick, mud pumps, generator sets,
circulation tanks and fuel tanks.

Responsibilities:
 Coordination of Geotechnical and topographical surveys
 Design of earthwork pavement layers and foundation structural
elements
 Carrying out daily site inspections to ensure that works are laid out
in their correct positions
 Ensure that the construction materials adhere to the design
specifications;
 Checking that the reinforcement is laid out to the correct size and
is at the correct spacing with adequate cover;
 Ensure that the quality of concrete is controlled to achieve the
designed strength,

Exploration Programme

During this period, MBW Consulting Ltd had been operating under a
Master Consultant Services Contract No. TUO 00088 with Tullow Uganda
Operations Pty Ltd.

Position: Project Engineer/Supervisor


Responsibilities:
 Design and construction supervision for the rehabilitation of the
2.1km escarpment road leading down to the Kaiso Tonya valley.
 Design and construction supervision of the 160m x 160m drill pad
and related civil works, pits and water supply to the Ngasa 1 site.
This pad was located in a wet, swampy area adjacent to Lake
Albert and required raising the pad by 1.7m to ensure dry
conditions for drilling.
 Conceptual design for a residential and commercial development
located at Kisinja Headland to cater for accommodation of all
future oil development activities in the Kaiso Tonya valley.
 Design and construction supervision of a container rack bridge
across the Wambabya River in the Kaiso Tonya valley to enable
seismic operations on that side of the valley.
 Design and supervision of Contractors; Kasese Nail and Wood
Industries Ltd, and BMS Minerals Ltd; for the 2008 drilling program
that included access roads and drill pads at Taitai, Lanya, Karuka
1 & 2, Ngege, Kasamene, and Kigogole.
 Design and supervision of the civil works for the 4000m2 materials
storage / pipe yard at Kisinja.
 Design and supervision of construction of a number of minor civil
works projects; including; Nziizi Emergency Culvert, Nziizi Borrow
Pit Reinstatement, minor repairs to Waraga Landing Strip, crack
repairs at Kyehoro Maternity Centre, Design of Well Covers
 Supervision of the construction of Kabwoya airstrip and parking
area at the Kabwoya in Kaiso valley,
 Design and preparation of Construction Tender and Contract
documents for the complete renovation and expansion of the
Harbour at Butiaba including a new 2100m 2 concrete jetty, 4000m 2

Project: Design and Construction supervision of thirty (30) fish landing
sites on Lakes Victoria, Albert, Edward, George and Kyoga funded by the
African Development Bank (April 2007 – December 2007)

MBW Consulting Engineers Ltd in association with Canadian Fishery


Consultants won the contract for the design and supervision of the thirty
(30) fish landing centres; together, they assembled a team of professionals
from Canada and Uganda comprising Engineers, Surveyors, Economists,
Fish Technologists, Environmentalists and Sociologists.
I was employed as a project engineer and my roles and responsibilities
included the following:-
 Reviewing the existing mapping, aerial photographs, and the base
mapping;
 Establishing of preliminary elevations of all site components
determined in the site layout;
 Working closely with the surveying team in order to produce
topographical maps relevant for the design of the water distribution
network, marine structures, earthworks and structures.
 Holding discussions and meetings with the design team (Architect,
Surveyor, Civil, Mechanical and Electrical Engineers) to establish
an efficient site layout;
 Receiving and reviewing input from the hydrographic and
geotechnical team.
 Preparation of technical specifications for earthworks, buildings
and water supply networks,
 Preparation of design drawings and tender documents,
 Computation of frictional head losses and subsequent sizing of
pipes for the water distribution networks.
 Participating in the geometric and structural design of the access
roads to the landing sites and the parking areas.
 Determination of unit rates of the construction activities for the
subsequent determination of the construction estimates.
 Computation of earthwork quantities from finished grade profiles
 Analysing and designing of water control structures;
 Carrying out earthwork analysis for balance of cut and fill;
 Identifying construction materials available locally.

Project: Provision of Technical Support Unit to the District Roads Re-


Gravelling Project

This was a European Union (EU) programme of road sector support to


Uganda, under the plan for Modernisation of Agriculture. The District
Roads component of the EU was initially focused on the seven districts of
Tororo, Bugiri, Jinja, Mukono, Wakiso, Mpigi and Masaka along the
Northern Corridor. The major problem at the districts was that they did not
have enough technical manpower.
MBW Consulting Engineers was therefore procured to establish a local
consultancy office in the districts of the Northern Corridor, and Technical
Support Unit, to offer road works design and supervision services to the
Districts of Tororo, Bugiri, Jinja, Mukono, Wakiso, Mpigi and Masaka.
Responsibilities:
 Carrying out road condition surveys of selected feeder roads in
Mukono.
 Preparation of strip maps for the selected roads in Mukono. These
included Kawoomya-Senyi Road, Nakifuma-Nakibano Road, and
Nakibano-Nagojje Roads in Mukono District.
 Preparation of Detailed Scope of Works and Tender Documents
for selected feeder roads.
 Construction Monitoring of Rehabilitation of Kawoomya - Senyi
Road, Nakifuma - Nakibano Road, and Nakibano - Nagojje Road
in Mukono District.
 Ensuring adherence to the contracts during implementation and
advising the District Engineers.
 Examining the contractor’s claims before submission to the District
Local Governments for payment.
 Monitoring and Evaluation of the work program during the
implementation.
 Organising Monthly Site meetings and preparing Minutes of Site
meetings.
