Seismic response accelerations determined according to IBC 2009.

Sample Blank PDF

Ss and S1 determined from 0.2 and 1-second spectral response
accelerations.

From geotechnical report, for 2475 year return period:

Ss = 1.461g - 1.550g
S1 = 0.392g - 0.412g

The project site is roughly located centrally in each contour, so

linear interpolation can be used to calculated Ss and S1 for this
specific site.

Ss = 1.506g section 1613.5.3 equation 16-36

S1 = 0.402g section 1613.5.3 equation 16-37

Site class D

Max considered response accelerations are as follows:

Short periods: SMS = Fa*Ss

1 second period: SM1 = Fv=S1

Fa = site coefficient defined in Table 1613.5.3(1)

Fv = site coefficient defined in Table 1613.5.3(2)

Fa = 1.0 for Ss>1.25 and site class D

Fv = 1.6 for S1 = 0.4 and site class D

SMS = 1.0*1.506 = 1.506g

SM1 = 1.6*0.402 = 0.643g

for 5% damping, damped design spectral response acceleration at

short periods, SDS, and at 1-second period, SD1, are determine from
equations 16-38 and 16-39.

SDS = 2/3*SMS
SD1 = 2/3*SM1

SDS = 1.506*2/3 = 1.000g

SD1 = 0.643*2/3 = 0.429g

Section 1613.5.6 determines seismic design category.

Occupancy category = IV from Table 1604.5

SDS > 0.50g so design category D from Table 1613.5.6(1)

SD1 > 0.20g so design category D from Table 1613.5.6(2)
