Abstract

Researching the question about if homework is necessary for young children was very

interesting. Researching this, good information was found. Information that was recommended

about this topic, was actually giving homework to bring home. This will help children with life

skills, and will help the children understand the materials more clear. This is actually said to be

true by a teacher at Canton High School who is a kindergarten teacher. She said that sending

homework home improves a lot in the academics and the children’s grades. This also gives an

opportunity for the parents to see what the children are working on in class each week.

Is Homework Necessary For Young Children

This research was to understand why it is important to send homework home with young

children. Everyone has their own opinion on the issues if homework is necessary for young

children, but they should really know what it does for the children in the long run. Homework

when children are young can impact them in so many ways. A number of studies said that

homework is very well for young children.

Child gain more knowledge when they do things over and over again, so bringing home

the work for the children to do with their parents is good in my opinion and the teacher that was

interviewed. The teacher that was interviewed said that she sends home 2-3 homework

assignments a week for the children to do at home. She tells the parents the reason she sends the

homework assignments home is because they will have the extra practice which is always good

in my opinion, and to show the parents what they are working on in class which is a great idea.

Sending homework home 2-3 times a week is a perfect amount and should be that way for all

teachers. This will not overwhelm the children, this will make them have more practice, and will

educate the children a lot more. Sending homework home will have the children gain more

responsibility and work ethic also. This will benefit the children for the years to come, and will

always appreciate why they got the homework sent home at such a young age.

Research shows that homework will benefit the children as they get older, and people

should agree 100 percent. This will make them have a great work ethic, a better understanding on

Homework

the materials that the children are working on. This will help them have a lot of responsibility

and the children will need to know responsibility their whole life so why not teach them young?

Research says “Certain kinds of homework can improve the test scores”. (Homework for Young

Children). Homework will improve the children’s test scores because they are practicing this at

home, not only in school. This will help them in the long run because of how much time they

practice their materials that they learn each week. Some people think that homework for young

children is just homework for parents. Research says, “It is unrealistic to expect most

kindergarteners or first graders to complete homework assignments on their own, particularly

after they’ve finished a day at school.”(Homework for Young Children). Children should be able

to come home after school and do a homework assignment 2-3 times a week. This should be no

problem. This will help them remember the materials, and show the parents what they are

working on in the classroom. Another study has shown that this will help them with their writing

and spelling skills. Sending homework home that helps helps the children with their spelling and

their writing will improve this so much. The children are not only practicing this in school, they

are doing it at home also. Working on homework at home will benefit the children for years to

come. This will teach the children life skills, and it will teach them to discipline them-selves until

their homework is done. This will also help parents get involved in the child’s learning and be

more involved in what they are doing in school. The research does not say that you should give

homework to young children everyday, but a couple times a week is a good amount. Some

people think that giving homework takes away from the child’s play time. The children should

Homework

have a set schedule for their homework and their play time. Homework shouldn’t take up all of

the children’s free time after school, but the children should be practicing their homework for a

little bit each night.

Homework is a good thing to have for young children because it is very important for the

children and even the parents. The children will gain a lot of important life skills from having to

do homework at home. It will show them time management, it will show them responsibility, and

it will also give them a strong work ethic. This is very important and will give the children

homework 2-3 times a week to show the parents what we are working on, and the children will

gain a better understanding of what we are learning in class. Children need to practice in school

and at home for a good and clear understanding of everything that they learn. Homework is very

important for a young child because they learn best when they are young and this will only

benefit them in the long run.

Researching this topic on why homework is necessary for young children was very

helpful for teachers that are planning to be in the teaching field because it will give them ideas on

what they should do. This will give the teachers good examples on if they should give homework

to young children. Homework should be given to young children in every classroom a couple

times a week for their best interest. Children remember more when it is repetition, and when they

are doing it at home they are better learners, and will remember more. Children are better

learners when they are learning the information more and more, and by doing this at home, they

will gain more information and understand more.
