Chapter 1- Background of the Study

The area focus of this study is to enhance the student’s participation in the
class discussion through classroom activities like brainstorming, reporting, and
active oral recitation. This study also show how the student’s response varied in
every activities employed by the teacher. Through these activities, the students
can more likely become properly evaluated based on their individual
performance and the teacher as well can enhance his/her activities based on
the student’s active participation.

1.1 Statement of the Problem

As the classroom setting must be learner-centered, it is necessary for the
teacher to have varied activities and act as a facilitator only to ensure the
active participation of the students. However, the researcher observed that
many students do not participate in some activities, depending on their
motivation, resulting into a teacher’s spoon-feeding and think of better activities
that could catch the student’s interest to participate. This is why the researcher
come up with this study in order to address the said issues and can help for
enhancement of student’s active participation through varied activities.

1.2 Significance of the Study

The study will be deemed important for the smooth interaction and to
ensure positive learning of the students at the end of the discussion. Likewise, the
findings of this research may prove useful to the following:
Students- For the students to actively participate in the class
discussion and have a positive feedback from their teachers of their
performance.

Teachers- For the teachers to become fully guided in employing

their activities included on their lessons plans as to ensure that their students are
motivated and interested enough to participate in the class discussion. This
study may also heighten their awareness in identifying the activities that are well
developed and interesting as well as the least.

Parents- The result of the study will serve as bird’s eye view of the
parents to know the needs of their children with regards to enhancing their
classroom participation.

Faculties- For the faculties to become aware on the status of the

students inside the classroom with regards to their participation and interest in
varied activities.

Future Researchers- The information and insights that will be gained

from this study may serve as guide for other researchers to conduct studies
within their area of preferences.

1.3 Scope of the Study

The study was conducted in Trento National High School, Trento, Agusan
del Sur. The area focus of this study is to enhance the student’s participation in
the class discussion through classroom activities like brainstorming, reporting,
and active oral recitation.
This study is limited to all Grade 10 Science Technology & Engineering (STE)
students who were enrolled in Trento National High School in the school year
2018-2019.

Chapter 3- Result

The researcher gathered the data through actual teaching and

observations in which she prepared the students with several activities such as
brainstorming, reporting, and oral recitation. This is to assess and enhance their
active participation in class discussion. To fully understand, the definitions of the
words were given as to follows:

Brainstorming- is a method for generating ideas to solve a design

problem. It usually involves a group, under the direction of a facilitator. The
strength of brainstorming is the potential participants have in drawing
associations between their ideas in a free-thinking environment, thereby
broadening the solution space.

On the first actual teaching, the researcher creates a learner-centered

environment by allowing the students to form in a group and brainstorm with
their group mates. The students were given a factsheets that contains the
specific topic assigned to each group and each of them can brainstorm with
what they have learned in which everybody is encourage to talk, participate,
and contribute to the group.
Reporting- an account or statement describing in detail an event,
situation, or the like, usually as the result of observation, inquiry or providing
information about the specific topic.

On the second actual teaching, the researcher distributes the task to the
students and allows them to do the reporting. On the other hand, reporting is
not just evaluating what have the students learned but it also boast their self-
confidence standing in front of their classmates.

Oral Recitation- is just one method of helping students memorize

information. This practice anchors information in the brain and helps students
absorb and retain information upon which understanding and critical thought is
based.

The researcher conducts the oral recitation in order to assess the student’s
individual learning. Though oral recitation accurately evaluate the student’s
understanding, the researcher also observed that many of the students were
having a stage fright and had difficulties in expressing their opinions in front of
their classmates, which made them behave and prefer not to talk.

On the first observation, the students were listening to the teacher who
discussed in front. The researcher observed that the student’s active
participation and interest depends on the topic given. The teacher discussed
AIDS/HIV and the student’s active participation is undeniably evident.

On the second observation, the students were not

actively participated on the teacher’s activity
because the lesson also is more on teacher-
centered that leads the discussion close to boring.
And as a result, every time a teacher asks, the
students can hardly gives their active response.
Chapter 4- Conclusions

Based on result, the following conclusions were drawn:

1. The students are more active in brainstorming activity, as they are

discussing and sharing with their group mates casually.

2. Reporting is not applicable to everybody. Those who are confident only

are enjoying reporting while others who are having stage fright are most
likely listen at the back and prefer not to talk. And since confident
students are only few, the rest are just merely an audience that results to
“not-so-learner-centered” discussion.

3. The students are not as interested in oral recitation as it makes them feel
nervous and tense.

4. The student’s active participation depends on the subject matter and the
way how the teacher delivers the lesson.

Recommendations

Based on these conclusions, the following recommendations were given:

1. That the result of this study be disseminated to the students and teachers
to make them aware of these activities that affect the student’s active
participation in the class discussion.

2. That a further study be conducted to all grade level in different schools.
