School rules and regulations are made to be complied with. Its main purpose is to maintain

discipline, peace and order inside the campus. They are made by the authorites not only for
themselves, but also for the students. This study aims to identify the extent of compliance among

students nurses in selected nursing colleges in Metro Manila to the rules and regulations of their

own university/school. It also aims to investigate the different factors that contribute to the

compliance of these students to school policies. Promoting discipline among student nurses is the

primary motivation of the researcher in undertaking this study. To determine the extent of

contributing factors and compliance with rules and regulation of nursing students, a survey method

was used, particularly, the descriptive and correlative methods.

The researcher considered this most appropriate because it targeted to determine the

current conditions of the nursing students’ compliance with Related Learning Experience (RLE)

as chosen topic for the study. It was used to describe the extent of the contributing factors and the

extent of the nursing students’ compliance with rules and regulations. The two sets of the variables

given to the respondents were paired and correlated.

The respondents of the study included three hundred sixty one (361) student nurses from

selected nursing colleges in Metro Manila. The target respondents of this study are the 2nd, 3rd, and

4th year students since they are already exposed to different RLE clinical areas and follow protocol

set by their school in the student handbook. The respondents are second semester enrollees of the

School Year 2010-2011.

The instrument used in this study was a structured questionnaire. It measured factual

information levels, opinions, attitudes, beliefs, ideas, feelings and perceptions of the respondents.

The statistical technique used for the treatment of data included percentage and

frequency counts, ranking, weighted mean or average, and Pearson Moment Product Correlation.
The researcher aimed to identify contributing factors to compliance of the student nurses

to nursing colleges’ rules and regulation as a basis for the improvement of the discipline policies

in the college.

The aim of the study was to analyze the correlations between continuing professional

education and eleven core competencies of staff nurses n selected tertiary hospitals in Metro

Manila, in a hope to offer significant enhancement plan for the staff development of the nursing

service.

The participants are composed of 220 students nurses from selected government and

private hospitals in Metro Manila. the sampling technique used by the researcher was the
Probability Sampling, specifically Simple Random Sampling Method. The researcher used this

method so that will be eventually sampled.

The researcher dealt with the respondents’ description by obtaining their profile, their

assessment of extent of continuing professional education and assessment of their eleven (11) core

competencies. To strengthen reliability and validity of the study, observation and interview was

utilized to substantiate its findings. The instrument is presented in Likert’s proposal- for the

purpose of scoring, a numerical value was assigned to each for the indicators.

The researcher utilized the following statistical techniques treat the data with in-depth

solutions of problems raised in the study: Percentage, Weighted Mean, Person’s Product Moment

Correlation and One-Way Analysis of Variance.

Findings of the study revealed that respondents staff nurses are often engaging into

continuing professional education for updating followed by performance enhancement and lastly

for competence building. Respondents are competent enough in all eleven key areas of core

competencies mandated by the Board of Nursing however, the excel most in rendering safe and

quality nursing care and least quantifications were observed for both personal and professional

development and research.

Lack of professional motivation topped on the problems ranked by the respondents in

which the second most difficult for them was to attend the continuing professional education

because of the home or family commitment.

A negative to very low correlation suggest a negligible or no significance at all hence, the

researcher accepted the null hypothesis of no significant relationship between the continuing

professional education and core competencies development of staff nurses.

Assessments made by the respondents on the differences of their core competencies are

significant to all variables of core competencies except for health education ad communication

while when they are grouped according to gender, no existed differences at all between male and

female. Engagement to higher education would entail significant difference only to health

education and source of continuing professional education appears to play a pivotal role on the

development of staff nurses’ ethico-moral and personal/professional development competencies.

Further, nurses with an extensive experience believed to be more proficient on the following key

areas: safe and quality nursing care, ethico-moral responsibility, personal and professional

development, record management, and communication. Lastly, nurses from private and

government hospitals do not significant differ at all on their core competencies except for quality

improvement, research, and collaboration and teamwork.

Lastly, a five-year development plan was formulated by the researcher to respond

accordingly to the continuing professional education needs of staff nurses based on the findings of

the study.
