Other or comments from Noise: Sounds of cars driving down the major street, loud sounds of train from tracks
above (e.g., noise, smells, directly behind houses
privacy, light, gardens, trees, Smells: Smells of Mexican food being grilled right outside of a supermarket, some foul
plants vs. concrete, group smells from human feces in the Las Puertas school parking lot
homes/student housing) Privacy: Most houses had exposed fencing so backyards could be easily viewed.
Light: Most street lights congregated down 6th Street. Most neighborhood streets only
have two to three street lights. Schools have light posts around the perimeter.
Gardens: One garden seen at the Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) and one
garden seen at Ochoa Elementary School. No backyard gardens noted.
Trees: Few trees seen, most very skinny, wilting trees
Plants vs. Concrete: More concrete seen than plants. Most plants were unmanaged weeds
in backyards, neighborhood sidewalks, and lots.
Group homes/student housing: Houses are very close together, many single family homes,
some single family homes were broken up into units to be subleased, many “For Sale/For
Rent” signs throughout the neighborhood

Culture and Ethnicity
Ethnic food stores Several Mexican markets (carnicerias, tortillarillas, Food City), mostly congregated on 4th Avenue.

Signage in other Many signs were either completely in Spanish or had Spanish and English but Spanish was the
languages larger and more predominant font.
Places of worship Most place of worship were Catholic with a few other denominations of Christian churches spread
throughout the city. Many of the names of the churches were in Spanish.
Art/sculpture Much of the art was paintings, murals, or shrines of Our Lady of Guadalupe. They were seen on the
walls of houses, sides of buildings, in the front yard of homes, and inside grocery stores. Grocery
stores also sold sculptures of various saints as well. The mural outside the Young Women’s
Christian Association was about empowerment and community. Many murals had traditional
Mexican images such as people in native dress, native foods, and writing in Spanish.
One gentleman was wearing a straw sombrero outside of Food City, but other than that, dress was

● PCHD PHN (full name and credentials)


● Conduct your survey with your census tract (CT) team over at least 2 trips to the community at different times of the
day.
● Drive, ride or walk all streets in the census tract. Walk around parks and go into stores and businesses open to the
public.
● Fill in every cell; use “none” or “not seen” when no information is entered.
● Spell out abbreviations on first use except for St., Blvd., Ave., Cir., Ct., Hwy., and other postal abbreviations’ found at:
http://pe.usps.gov/text/pub28/28apc_002.htm.
● Use the symbol ~ for an approximate number (only for features in community you are counting. Do not round statistics
from census.
● Use Comments sections to describe important findings and/or list electronic sources.
● Include sources of data (other than the Census and PimaMaps) where requested. For the source, include website link
OR author and document title for any information found online. An APA reference is not necessary.
● The profile is asking for what is inside the boundaries of the CT but also include what resources are being used by
people living in the CT, which are just outside the CT boundaries. If including a resource or service just outside CT, it
