LESSON RATIONALE (CAEP K-6 1.a)

The students in this particular class are very interested in George Washington as a historical figure. I
incorporated elements of games and coloring to further engage student interest in this content.

READINESS
I. Goals/Objectives/Standard(s)
A. Goal: Students will be able to identify significant holidays in American culture and the people involved.
B. Objective: After viewing the PowerPoint, students will be able to identify at least three facts about
George Washington, and will be able to identify which facts are true and which are not true.
C. Standards: NCSS/ IAS
a. NCSS: Thematic Strand 1-Culture
b. IAS: 1.1.5 Identify people and events observed in national celebrations and holidays.
II. Management Plan
a. Materials:
• George Washington Powerpoint
• True/False Sort cards and chart
• “2 Truths and a Lie” coloring worksheet
b. Time: 25-45 minutes
c. Space
• Anticipatory Set: students will sit at the front rug
• Lesson Presentation: students will sit at their seats or on the front rug, whichever will allow
them to see the Powerpoint and encourage them to pay attention to the lesson.
• Check for Understanding-Closure: students will sit at their seats
d. Behavior
• Students will sit quietly at their seats while I am presenting instruction of the content.
• Students will participate in class and partner discussions when appropriate.
• Students will raise their hands to ask/answer questions, and will wait until they are called on
to speak.

III. Adaptation to Individual Differences and Diverse Learners

• Students with visual impairments will be able to sit as close as they need to in order to see the PowerPoint
during the lesson presentation.
• Students who do not feel comfortable sharing with the whole class can feel more comfortable sharing with
their partners.
• Students who may be self-conscious about answering assessment questions can feel more secure while
answering the exit ticket individually.

PLAN FOR INSTRUCTION (CAEP K-6 1.b)

IV. Anticipatory Set
 “Hi class. I am going to start by playing a game with you. Have you all played or heard of the
game ‘2 Truths and a Lie’ before?” Wait for student response.
 “For those of you who haven’t played before, I will briefly explain the rules of the game. I am
going to tell you all three different sentences about myself. Two of the sentences are true, and

one is a lie. As you talk with your shoulder partner, you have to figure out which sentence is
the lie. Is everyone ready?” Wait a few moments for student responses.
 “Okay, here are my three sentences: … (The sentences will be written on the whiteboard for
students to see.) “I will leave these up on board for you to look at while you discuss with your
partner which of these sentences you think is a lie.” Give students a few minutes to discuss
with their groups. Walk around and stop briefly at each group to monitor conversations.
 “If you think your partner has come to a decision, go ahead and give me a thumbs up.” Wait a few
moments for student responses.
 “I’m going to call on a few people to tell me their group’s decision. Hold up a 1 if you think the
first sentence is a lie, a 2 if you think the second sentence is a lie, and a 3 if you think the third
sentence is a lie.”
 Call on one student from a partner group and allow them to respond with their number. “Why do
you think that sentence is a lie?” Wait for that student to give their group’s reasoning. Repeat
this for a few more partner groups.
 “My lie was sentence number 2. Good job to those groups that guessed correctly!”

V. Purpose: “Today we are going to take a walk through the life of George Washington. Some things I’m
going to teach you will be things that you have already learned, some will be new, and others will be
things that you thought were true, but actually aren’t. Just like the game we played, we’re going to have
to figure out what’s true and what are the lies.”

VI. Lesson Presentation (Input/Output) (CAEP K-6 3.d)

 I will show the PowerPoint to the class. Students will sit at their seats while I am presenting the
content.
 Each slide will have an accompanying True/False Sort card. The statement on the card will be a
statement from the content on the PowerPoint slide. I will call on a quiet student to come up to
the front of the classroom and sort the card into either the True or False category. Once the
student returns to their seat, the class will work together to determine whether or not the card is
sorted into the right category. When the card is correctly sorted, I will move on to the next slide.
I will complete the True/False Sort for the rest of the PowerPoint slides.

VII. Check for understanding.

• As I go through the PowerPoint, I will call on students to help me complete the True/False Sort about
George Washington. After completing the content on each slide, I will call on individual students to
sort the card about that content into either the True or False category. The class will determine as a
group whether the statement on the card is true or false. Once the card is correctly sorted, we will
move on to the next slide. We will continue doing this through the rest of the PowerPoint.

VIII. Review learning outcomes / Closure

• “We are going to play ‘2 Truths and a Lie’ again, but this time, the statements will be about some things
we just learned about George Washington. Each of you will have a worksheet with some pictures on it.
Each of the pictures represent either a ‘truth’ or a ‘lie’. You will color the picture that represents the
lie. We will do the front side together. Make sure you are on the side with the pictures of a monument,
a dollar bill, and a tree.” Walk around and make sure each student is on the front side of the paper,
and check that each student has written their name at the top.

Social Studies--2018
• “Take a look at the pictures, and talk with your table mates about what the pictures might represent.”
Wait a few moments for student discussions.
• “Who can tell me what the pictures represent?” Call on a quiet student who is raising their hand to share
with the class.
• “Now talk with your table group about which picture might be the ‘lie’. When you think your group has
an answer, raise your hands.” Wait a few moments for student discussions.
• “On the count of three, hold up a ‘one’ if you think the first picture is the ‘lie’, a ‘two’ if you think it’s the
second picture, and a ‘three’ if you think it’s the last picture. One…two…three!” Wait until all
students are holding up a number.
• “Who can tell me why you chose that picture?” Call on students to share their answers, while looking for
the answer “the tree, because he didn’t actually chop down a cherry tree” (or something similar).
• “Yes, George Washington didn’t actually chop down a cherry tree, so that’s not true. Pick your favorite
crayon color and color the picture of the tree.” Wait a few moments for students to color.
• “Now flip your paper over and look at the other pictures. This time, it’s up to you to figure out which
picture represents the ‘lie’. Go ahead and work on that now.” Walk around the room and monitor
whether or not students are on task, and help students as necessary. Wait a few moments while
students complete the activity.
• “Who can share with the class what picture they colored?” Call on students to share their answers, while
looking for the answer “the teeth, because he didn’t actually have wooden teeth” (or something
similar).
• “Yes, George Washington didn’t actually have wooden teeth; they just looked wooden because they were
stained. Make sure that you colored the picture of the teeth. Once that picture is colored and your
name is on your paper, go ahead and turn it in the blue tray. I will call on quiet tables to turn in their
papers.”

PLAN FOR ASSESSMENT (CAEP K-6 3.a)

• Formative, during Instruction: True/False Sort (see Check for Understanding portion of lesson plan)
• Formative, during Closure: 2 Truths and a Lie coloring worksheet (see Closure portion of lesson plan)-
Students will play the game “2 Truths and a Lie” again, but with facts about George Washington. The
two truths will be true facts about Washington, and the lie will be a myth; these will come from the
facts presented in the instruction portion of the lesson. There will be two sets of “2 Truths and a Lie”,
and the statements will be presented in the form of pictures. We will complete the first set of
statements as a class; students will color the pictures that represent the true facts about George
Washington, and will leave the “lie” blank. On the other side, students will complete the “2 Truths and
a Lie” by themselves, but we will go over the answers as a class.
