Creative Writing Lesson 4 Handout 10 Name. Date_ Haikus and Tankas Directions: Some types of poems such as haiku and tanka have rather distinctive patterns. Carefully compare the patterns to their examples; then, write your own haiku or tanka, Haiku: No rhyme/3 lines First line—-6 syllables Second line—7 syllables Third line~5 syllables Use present tense Usually a tie to nature with an ob- servation, followed by an element of suggestion or question Reveals the poet's feelings Tanka: No rhyme/S lines 5, 7, 5, 7, and 7 syllables Note that the haiku (5 - 7 - 5) is the base for the tanka.
