Direct Instruction Lesson Plan

I. Describe the Class


a. This is a ninth grade English class with 30 students in it. Two of them are second
language learners, one is dyslexic, and three are gifted.
II. Subject/Skill:
a. Learning to use similes and metaphors
III. Objective(s)
a. While reading poetry and prose, students will be able to recognize similes and
metaphors and distinguish the difference between the two with 90% accuracy.
b. Using the knowledge they learned from the lesson, students will be able to craft
their own original similes and metaphors.
IV. Procedures
a. Introduce students to the concepts of similes and metaphors, and provide
definitions for each. Have students write down the definitions in their notes.
b. Review figurative language with students; what is the definition of figurative
language? Why is figurative language used in prose and poetry?
c. Present students with several examples of similes and metaphors
d. Engage class with discussion about similes and metaphors and ask for common
examples of each from student volunteers.
e. Provide each students with text handouts and two different color highlighters.
Have students read the passage and highlight the similes in one color and the
metaphor in another color.

VI. Grouping Structures
a. Students will go over the lesson as a whole class, then as individuals, then as a
whole class once again.
VII. Modifications
a. Handouts given to second language learners will be given two handouts, one in
English and one as a translation into their native language. The dyslexic student
will be given an audio recording of the handout to listen to while going over the
paper with a highlighter. The gifted students will be given a second handout with
more difficult to spot examples of similes and metaphors.
VIII. Assessment
a. Go over the handout as a class and identify all instances of similes and metaphors.
Review the definitions.
b. For homework, have students create a Venn Diagram examining the similarities
and differences between similes and metaphors, and then have them create 5
original examples of each.
