So What Makes A Building Green?

Although the concept of ' green buildings ' is still under development in India, the

Green Building Council suggests that 447 of the 2,362 buildings that have been

registered are ' green. 'The number is sure to increase with customers becoming more

inclined to live in a greener way. So, so what is a green building?

The sustainability and environmental friendliness of a building is rated according to

its:

 Water efficiency – minimal waste

 Optimum use of energy using natural insulation designs – use of daylight and
solar cells
 Reducing water and recycling – concepts like rainwater harvesting
 Amount of natural green cover in and around the building
 Overall increase in productivity of occupants

Consequently, the benefits include:

 Lower energy bills

 Lower water bills
 More comfortable living/working environment
 Reduced carbon footprint
 Avenues for outdoor recreation
 Improved health
Localizing green buildings: Will BERDE take the

LEED?

Living in the Philippines, we have no choice but to adapt to the relentless attack of t

yphoons and moonsoon rains.Yet it seems that most of us are determined to build c

oncrete boxes around us to keep nature out — not to work with it, but against it.

Luckily, we got involved in the green construction movement and layed the

groundwork by brick with various green organizations in the building industry. The

United Architects of the Philippines ' Green Architecture Movement (GAM) and Green

Architecture Advocacy Philippines (GreenAP) are two of the locally pushed non-profit

organizations for sustainability. These are positive signs of sustainable design and

building initiatives in the country, along with the recognition of our own green building

council — PhilGBC or the Philippine Green Building Council— as part of a global

network of green building councils. Green building rating tools, such as the Leadership

in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system in the US, have been

established by GBCs all over the world to advocate for sustainability in the built

environment. The popularity of LEED has created quite a market for green building

practices, with the prestige of being LEED-certified reaching even our side of the

world. The Philippines had 19 LEED registered projects, as of 2011, with the Zuellig

building in Makati gunning for Gold Level certification (the other levels are:

Certification, Silver and Platinum).

Chinatown Public Library, Chicago

CHINATOWN PUBLIC

LIBRARY, CHICAGO: It's hard

to identify the most beautiful

LEED-certified buildings in

Chicago... especially since last

year Illinois was named the

number one state for LEED

certification (with over 400 projects in Chicago alone). But perhaps our favorite could

be the new branch of the Chinatown Public Library. The learning temple has been

designed with feng shui in mind and has a living green roof spanning 16,000 square

feet. The Gold-certified building also uses a solar shading screen, LED lighting with

low energy, and a radiant heating and cooling system designed to keep readers

comfortable.
Green Features

Sustainable design features

include radiant cooling and

heating, on-site thermal storage

tanks, a green roof and on-site

storm water retention system,

and natural daylight technologies.

A solar shading screen integrated in the glass curtain wall of the building reduces heat

gain without compromising views of the neighborhood, resulting in a building

consuming 30% less energy.

Occupancy of the Building

The two-story building was designed to be flexible

and useful inside. SOM designers worked closely

with officials from the Chicago Public Library to

identify opportunities for programmatic overlap,

increasing the projected use of many building

spaces. The community meeting area and

children's area are located at ground level, while

teen and adult areas are located at second level.

All spaces connect to the central atrium room, providing clear orientation and spatial

cohesion, like a traditional Chinese courtyard plan.

Equipment’s and Features Used

Advantages

On the outside, a range of vertical shading fins juxtaposes an ultra-transparent, high-

performance glass curtain wall that maximizes visibility during the day for both library

patrons and passers-by, while presenting the image of a glowing night lantern. The

south-facing entrance of the building, soft triangular shape and gentle interior

circulation are the reference points of Feng Shui design.

Conclusion

The Chicago Public Library, Chinatown Branch serves as a civic, educational, and social

hub for the city’s Chinatown neighborhood. The most visited branch in the Chicago

Public Library system, the library provides a much-needed public gathering place

geared toward community activities and technology-based learning. Anchored by a

skylit two-story central atrium, the building’s interiors are open concept, flexible, and

sustainable, and feature daylighting, panoramic neighborhood views, with bright,

comfortable furnishings for visitors of all ages, including a vibrant site-specific 60-foot

mural on the history of Chicago’s Chinatown painted by a local artist.
