Reader’s Workshop and Social Studies

We have continued on with our historical fiction unit. By integrating our reading standards and
social studies standards on Vermont state history, students are developing an understanding of
what life was like for a Vermont settler in the pre-Revolutionary War days. We are about a
third of the way through the classic book, Green Mountain Hero by Edgar Newman Jackson.
Students continue to work on the following reading and social studies goals:

● I can use specific details in a story to help me describe a character, setting or event in the story.
● I can read closely to find answers explicitly in text (right there answers).
● I can figure out the meanings of words and phrases an author uses.
● I can describe ways that life in Vermont has both changed and stayed the same over time
● I can examine how events, people, problems and ideas have shaped the community and Vermont (e.g., Ann
Story’s role in the American Revolution)
● I can make predictions based on an understanding of the past and the present in Vermont. (e.g., What
was farming in Vermont like in the past? What is it like now? What will it be like in the future?)
