What is Scenic Design?
Anything to do with the look of the stage for the performance

-Lighting
-Set construction
-Set furniture
-Scenic painting
-Properties

All of these elements contribute to the WHOLE of the look

Safety
-Research all products before buying them, to -All solvents (chemicals that dissolve other
check for safe use practices (MSDSs should be things) and sprays MUST be stored in a metal
available for almost all products) → always keep a cabinet → they are combustible
copy of the MSDS in the paint shop in case of
accidents

-More often than not, masks are worn for spray

paint so that you inhale less toxins

-Latex or Vinyl gloves should be used when

dealing with wood stain or special brush/roller
cleaning products (more vinyl than latex these
days due to allergies)
Tools and Supplies
-More than just a paintbrush (many types of
paintbrushes as well)

-Lining brush (thin, defined shape)

-Chip and foam brushes (less durable/disposable,

padded)

-Lay-in brush (wide, used for painting large areas)

-Graining brush (vary in length of bristles for a wood

grain effect)

-Flogger brush (really long bristles, create texture in

wet paint, removing chalk from a surface)
Tools and Supplies
-Rollers (great for walls, floors, large surfaces)

-Frisket (plastic sheet with an adhesive back, used to

make specific patterns)

Textures of Paint
Not a
stage set,
but super
cool!
What are we doing??
Painting the set for the Grade 6 play this year!

Groups of 4

Each group will have 2 canvases to paint (each is 4ft x 8ft )

6 flats (2 per group for one design)

Ex. 1 group of 4 will have one design for school lockers, they will paint 2 canvases on
different sets of periaktois
Once your group decides on
3 designs your design, you must show
it to Ms. Knight and I for
approval.
School hallway/lockers
Once approved: make a fully
drawn, coloured picture of it
to hand in for marks
